Travis Scott remains a ‘walking vibe’ on his confident, minor-key banger, “Franchise,” featuring Young Thug and M.I.A.
Travis Scott is no stranger to success. He’s landed both successful singles as well as successful albums. After the Billboard Hot 100 had been dominated by Cardi B (“Wap”) and BTS (“Dynamite”), Scott came in and knocked both singles down a peg. “Franchise,” featuring Young Thug and M.I.A. became one of few singles to debut at no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Undoubtedly, “Franchise” was the biggest story of the Hot 100 dated 10/10/20. So, why so much success the first week out?
Well, first of all, Travis Scott is a walking VIBE. While obviously you won’t find his picture under the definition of the word in a dictionary (or online), it should be. “Franchise” is another, fine example of a record that exemplifies that aesthetic and spirit of the rapper. He’s not the most skilled lyricist but the swagger and V-I-B-E gives him an edge here. The chorus is infectious if nothing else:
“Yup, in my white tee Yeah, call up Hype Williams for the hype, please Uh, they gon’ wipe you before you wipe me Unboxing my checks, not my Nikes.”
Add the other two ingredients – Young Thug and M.I.A. – and “Franchise” is undoubtedly LIT. Profound it’s not, but fun it is. Production doesn’t hurt the cause either, with Scott, CHASE B, and Teddy Walton constructing a sleek, minor-key backdrop, utilizing a Dem Franchize Boyz “White Tee.”
Final Thoughts
So, will you leave “Franchise” totally wowed? Nah, but you can definitely feel the vibe and the fun of this inoffensive hip-hop joint. No wheels are reinvented, nor are any pendulums swung, but “Franchise” is a confident, enjoyable banger with some big personalities contributing.
