Rob $tone has one of the hottest rap singles of 2016 on his hands. Who is Rob $tone? One of many up-and-coming rappers releasing a single percolating at the right time. For the infectious “Chill Bill,” $tone brings some friends along for the “high-flying” time – J. Davi$ and Spooks.
“Chill Bill” features infectious production work. The key component is the whistle sample, which apparently has a long history according to an article by Lauren Nostro for Genius. The sample is superbly anchored by a thudding kick. “Chill Bill” certainly isn’t all production – there are rhymes too. Aggressive rhymes complement the kick and whistle. The hook is alluring, in the shallowest, weed-touting way possible:
“Said she wanna roll with me and smoke up all my weed / I said baby just buy dutches cause you can’t smoke for free / I got some loud but no money babe buy me a Fiji / she said you need a job, b*tch f*ck a job I still get cheese”
Each MC shines at some point. $tone delivers a bullet on the first verse as he raps about giving up lean:
“Used to sip out Styrofoam but figured I should stick to dro.”
J. Davi$ makes a clever television reference in regards to the ultra-cliché “steal yo girl” reference on the second verse:
“Mr. Kenny Powers bout to take your girlfriend home tonight, b*tch.”
Spooks gets his on the third verse, thanks to clever wordplay:
“And I’m smokin’ on that widow / when you see it out the window.”
Final Thoughts
All in all, Rob Stone and company delivers the ultimate weed anthem with “Chill Bill.” “Chill Bill” is successful thanks to confident rhymes and banging production work. There’s no coming down.
