4 out of 5 stars

Pharrell Williams & Kim Burrell make magic together on “I See A Victory.”

Pharrell Williams produced and composed the soundtrack to the upcoming film Hidden Figures.  Naturally, the singles issued from Hidden Figures stay true to his signature sound.  He is the featured artist on single Runnin.” On single “I See A Victory,” he lets the ever-soulful Kim Burrell take the reins.

“I See a Victory” is an interesting mix of contemporary gospel and urban contemporary. Its rare that 808s are part of a gospel song… Williams’s production on this cut is unique. Only he would come up with something this bizarre that works effectively.

Burrell delivers a lovely, nuanced vocal performance. She is perfectly suited for this cut with her commanding vocal presence. She receives sound support from the backing choir. The bridge is handled by the choir, allowing her to perform those signature, jazzy runs. The biggest rub with the record is that it is only 3:07 long.

Final Thoughts

All in all, “I See A Victory” A winning track from the first listen. It’s well produced and a clear departure from what is expected of gospel. Are Pharrell and Kim a match made in heaven? Perhaps.
