Bebe Rexha, I Got You © Warner Bros.

4 out of 5 stars

Up and coming pop artist Bebe Rexha continues to elevate her profile on her enjoyable, danceable pop single, “I Got You.”

Bebe Rexha has been slowly building up her musical career.  She’s collaborated on numerous artist’s songs, including G-Eazy single “Me, Myself & I.” This go-round, it’s all on Rexha to establish her artistic brand.  She does so exceptionally well on single “I Got You.”

“I Got You” features rhythmic drum programming that is subtle initially, but ultimately anchors the song. Vocally, Rexha is spot on, delivering a sound performance. The intensity of the song itself cranks up on the chorus. The results are a nice build-up of intensity from the start of the verse to the chorus. On the second verse, while there’s slightly more intensity, Rexha brings it back down to build it up again.

The lyrics are catchy. This is predictable, but definitely infectious.  The pre-chorus iterates the titular lyric (“Cause I got you…”).  The following chorus – catchy AF – makes excellent use of nonsensical syllables (“nah”) and repetition. It’s gimmicky, but infectiously so.

“We can get high, oh nah, nah, nah / we can get low, oh nah, nah, nah / let me be your friend, baby let me in / tell you no lies, oh, nah, nah, nah…”

The bridge suits this record perfectly, providing a predictable, but sound contrast overall.

“I’d do the time for you / tell a lie for you / yeah, baby, that’s what I’d do / I’d walk the line for you / take a shot for you / yeah, baby that’s what I’d do…”

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, “I Got You” is catchy AF. This is an enjoyable and spirited record. It features a thoughtful build-up from subtlety to growing bombastic. Rexha delivers solid vocals throughout.
