2 Chainz conceives a pleasant vibe on single, “It’s A Vibe.” He’s assisted by Ty Dolla $ign, Trey Songz, and Jhene Aiko.
2 Chainz isn’t the deepest rapper in the game…understatement. Nonetheless, the rapper formerly known as Tity Boi has had his fair share of moments. “Birthday Song,” featuring Kanye West, remains a personal favorite to this day, despite its absurdness. Since that seminal record and Based on a T.R.U. Story, arguably, 2 Chainz has been “hit or miss.” On single “It’s A Vibe,” he delivers a respectable performance.
By respectable, that doesn’t mean 2 Chainz is being transcendent or thinking beyond his pants. It does mean, “It’s A Vibe” is a catchy record with some potential. He enlists a star-studded cast: Ty Dolla $ign, Trey Songz, and Jhene Aiko. The chorus sets the tone, performed by 2 Chainz and Trey Songz. Depth isn’t the M.O., but it’s hard to deny how chill the vibe is: “That’s a vibe / She wanna vibe / That’s a vibe / Yeah, uh…”. Ty Dolla $ign takes the first verse, keeping things simple AF. In Ty’s hands, he essentially suggests “it’s going down,” sexually of course.
“Late night Oh it’s a vibe Let me slide… Dim the lights Oh it’s a vibe, yeah Get high.”
Trey Songz gets more spotlight on the second verse. While his sensual approach is never shocking, he’s blunt in regards to the ensuing pleasure. This involves wetness… we’ll leave it there. 2 Chainz finally owns his song on the third verse, rapping about his money and material things, sex, and hustling. Finally, Jhene Aiko gets her turn, which is something of the second chorus of the song.
Final Thoughts
All in all, “It’s A Vibe” is an enjoyable 2 Chainz record. Expectedly, the southern rapper doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but he’s in his zone. Furthermore, he uses his guests soundly, even if they don’t say anything particularly transcendent. Regardless, it’s a vibe.
