Oklahoma country vet Toby Keith shines on yet another ridiculous single, “Wacky Tobaccy,” a gem from his new album, ‘The Bus Songs.’
Over the years, Toby Keith has proven he has quite the sense of humor. The Oklahoma country vet had quite a run during his prime, but he managed to rejuvenate his career with “Red Solo Cup.” While his viability has since waned again, Keith once more piqued interest with his hilarious and explicitly titled “Shitty Golfer.” Keeping things fun and loose on his new album The Bus Songs, in addition to being the shitty golfer that he is, he also sings about “Wacky Tobaccy.”
Naturally, Keith isn’t singing about cigarettes, but weed, which makes “Wacky Tobaccy” that much more fun. Willie Nelson has been singing about pot for some time, so country seems to be more open to going there as of late. Chris Stapleton smoked “The Stems” earlier this year on From a Room: Vol. 1. In this case, Keith isn’t the one partaking of that herb, it’s Wanda. Expectedly, the song is tongue-n-cheek to the nth degree, highlighted by the ridiculous, yet infectious chorus.
“That old Wacky Tobaccy / When you feel it creeping up on you / That old Wacky Tobaccy / Kick back and let it do what it do.”
Fun is the name of the game when it comes to this song. The songwriting is funny and irresponsible, while Toby Keith gets to show off his killer personality. He knows his weed apparently, as he details it in the third verse like a champ.
“You got your Mexican and Jamaican with those buds of blue / Humboldt County and Hydroponic too / Okeechobee Purple from down in the south / And that ol’ stuff your uncle smokes ‘ill give you cotton mouth…”
Final Thoughts
If you thought “Shitty Golfer” was fun, well, “Wacky Tobaccy” matches if, if it doesn’t exceed it. Toby Keith is on his game, setting up The Bus Songs for critical success if nothing else. The question is, can “Wacky Tobaccy” help give the Oklahoma country legend a commercial hit album again?
