Titanic… 5ive Songs [Photo Credits: Alamo, Brent Faulkner, Grade A Productions, Interscope, The Musical Hype, Pixabay, Sony, Sub Pop, Western and 6th]On the 10th edition of 5ive Songs, we select five songs that are associated with the legendary Titanic 🚢 in some form or fashion.

On 5ive Songs, we (I) keep things short and sweet – no extra calories or needless fluff.  There’s a topic, five songs, and a short blurb that doesn’t exceed a paragraph.  Yes, it’s a playlist, but it’s a miniature playlist that shouldn’t take much time to consume.  On this edition of 5IVE SONGS, we select five songs that are associated with the legendary Titanic 🚢 in some form or fashion.

1. Juice WRLD, “Titanic”

Legends Never Die • Grade A Productions / Interscope • 2020

Juice WRLD, Legends Never Die [Photo Credit: Interscope]Among the best moments from Legends Never Die, the posthumous studio album by Juice WRLD is the third track, “Titanic.” It all starts with a super catchy chorus that highlights the legendary Luxury cruiser that sunk: “Abandon all ships, it’s about to go down / No Titanic (Titanic) / There’s a lot going on in my head right now / But I manage.” Of course, this isn’t about the ship or the Academy Award winning film. Juice WRLD uses this as an opportunity to reflect on himself, specifically his issues and drug use.

2. Weyes Blood, “Titanic Rising”

Titanic Rising • Sub Pop • 2019

Weyes Blood, Titanic Rising [Photo Credit: Sub Pop]Weyes Blood, Titanic Rising [Photo Credit: Sub Pop]Weyes Blood had a critically acclaimed album on her hands with Titanic Rising, which was released in 2019.  Although Weyes Blood is a really cool name, the singer/songwriter’s real name is Natalie Laura Mering – just throwing that out there!  Anyways, what’s interesting about Titanic Rising is that “Titanic Rising,” the fifth track, is incredibly brief (an interlude essentially) and just happens to be an instrumental. The instrumental is a truly gorgeous, expressive one, that ticks the boxes when it comes to an effective tone poem. Contextually, it sits in between “Something to Believe in” and “Movies”.

3. Rod Wave, “Titanic”

Ft. Kevin Gates

Ghetto Gospel • Alamo • 2019

Rod Wave, Ghetto Gospel [Photo Credit: Alamo]Rod Wave brings our third Titanic song to the table, c/o his 2019 album, Ghetto Gospel. He enlists the services of “2 Phones” rapper Kevin Gates as they provide ‘historically accurate details’ about the RMS Titanic.  Okay, I’m lying through my teeth considering “Titanic” never mentions the 1912 ship once.  This record is more Jack/Rose relationship-oriented than the least bit historical, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.  Rod Wave opens up about heartbreak, and Kevin Gates supports him, remembering his own “First real one that ever was.”

4. Jackson Wang, “Titanic”

Ft. Rich Brian

MIRRORS • Western and 6th • 2019

Jackson Wang, MIRRORS [Photo Credit: Western and 6th]While Titanic has been used loosely throughout this edition of 5ive songs, Jackson Wang, assisted by Rich Brian change that on “Titanic.” “Titanic” appears on Wang’s eight-song album (or mini-album, etc.), MIRRORS, released in 2019.  We definitely get some noteworthy quotes that highlight the ship.  Wang asserts on the first verse, “I got your girl on panic / Iced out my wrist Titanic / Like 2-1, I’m on my savage…” Oh snap! As for Rich Brian, “Uh, 20 women on me, fallin’ like Titanic / Smash her ‘til she singin’, soundin’ like do-re-mi…” Now that’s ice cold!

5. Céline Dion, “My Heart Will Go On” – Love Theme from Titanic

Let’s Talk About Love • Sony • 1997

Céline Dion, Let’s Talk About Love [Photo Credit: Sony]“Near, far, wherever you are / I believe that the heart does go on / Once more, you open the door / And you’re here in my heart / And my heart will go no and on.” Oh, the feels! C’mon, you knew the Céline Dion classic would grace this list, right? “My Heart Will Go On,” the timeless and ubiquitous ‘Love Theme from Titanic’ would never be denied a spot, period.  This song has everything to do with the love story between Jack and Rose.  Even as the song approaches its silver anniversary, it’s still quite the potent tearjerker.
