Tinashe brings out alter-ego ‘Nashe’ on “Throw a Fit,” her second post-Joyride single. While her aggressive effort is appreciated, the song lacks in depth.
“Nashe might just pop it on a handstand…” Sofia Mele of Billboard correctly characterizes “Throw a Fit” as ‘bratty’. She goes on to write that Tinashe “introduces herself from the jump as ‘Nashe’.” In other words, the R&B musician is opting to be more aggressive. Also, surprisingly, she’s preparing a new album. Why is that surprising? She only released Joyride (arguably unsuccessfully) on April 13, 2018. Definitely She’s confident and unapologetic on her second post-Joyride single.
Nashe hits us with the chorus following her aforementioned proclamation. The chorus is littered with s-bombs – eight of them to be exact. That’s not exactly deep songwriting, but, Tinashe wants to ensure everyone knows she’s got that attitude working for her.
“I’m the shit, I know I’m the shit, yeah I’m super lit, if you don’t buy me what I want, I’ma throw a fit.”
Naturally, over the minor-key production which possesses a ‘quiet energy,’ Tinashe sounds utterly childish. On the verses, she continues to be aggressive and outlandish, particularly when she says, “Ay, pussy wet all by herself / And if he drown, I ain’t gon’ help.” She references her private parts on the second verse once more, but not before she states, “Passing up, ain’t f**king for the clout / I got sauce, bitch, I shine.” Oh brother.
Final Thoughts
Here’s the thing. I actually liked the album Joyride, particularly underrated non-single, “Salt.” That said, even though I like it, I clearly see that Tinashe has a problem connecting with an audience. Trying to be more aggressive might work to an extent. The problem is, there’s simply not much meat on “Throw a Fit, even as brief as it is, not to mention how hard she tries.
