3 out of 5 stars

Up-and-coming contemporary R&B/pop artist Tinashe drops a good record with “Superlove,” though arguably it’s not enough to elevate her superstardom.

After releasing her critically acclaimed debut Aquarius in 2014, up-and-coming R&B/pop artist Tinashe returns with single, “Superlove.” As an artist, Tinashe seems to share sensibilities with the likes of Janet Jackson, Ciara, and Amerie. Considering those contemporaries and respective stylistic approaches, “Superlove” yields the expected results. The keyword is expected.

Expected isn’t necessarily a bad thing, nor is it necessarily a good thing.  “Superlove” is predictable. It is in line with the small sample size Tinashe has provided in her short career. Unfortunately, it doesn’t take Tinashe – still very much a burgeoning artist – to the next level. The main issue with “Superlove” is the fact that it’s not brand new. Part of that is by design, but perhaps the plans should have been altered.

Ciara has recorded songs like “Superlove” years and years back (there’s that design thing again). One better, Janet Jackson has nailed this type of joint ten times over, before C ever sang about her “Goodies.” The point? “Superlove” is good, but good may not be enough to make Tinashe a star.  Music stars are hard to come by in 2016 given the poor sales climate, so, a single like “Superlove” doesn’t scream hit.

Another comparison point is “2 On,” Tinashe’s breakout debut single.  “2 On” was sexy, superbly produced, and had a freshness about it. Sure, it was club-minded, but it was memorable.  “Superlove” lacks that same excitement and oomph, save for Tinashe’s profane, “f*ck that sh*t, I’m passionate.”

Is Tinashe passionate? Probably, but can the “Superlove” penetrate through radio filled with more ear-catching pop records? Seems like a stretch for T.  Tinashe sings it best herself: “They will never love you babe / like I love you, babe.” With contemporary R&B on the rocks, it’ll take more than “Superlove” to reenergize the genre.
