4 out of 5 stars

Up-and-coming pop artist Tinashe delivers on fun, flirty, hook-up single, “Company.” She’s not looking for anything serious – just “some company, company.”

In the process of releasing her sophomore album, urban pop artist Tinashe previously issued sexy single “Superlove.” “Superlove” was respectable, but not game changing.  While “Company” isn’t necessarily game-changing either, it’s a step up for the artist by all means.

“Company” benefits from slick, sexy production work. The effect of the record is that it literally sounds like “it’s about to go down.” Tinashe delivers excellent vocals in which, she amplifies sex “cooing” and singing flirtatiously.  Instantly, “Company” sounds more distinct than single.

While “Company” lacks transcendence given its shallowness, it features a different sound than many songs currently on the radio.  The production work is superb, with a minimalist mindset. Ultimately, it’s gimmicky, quirky, and exceptional.  There is tasteful, selective use of vocal harmonies in select spots.

A Catchy chorus “seals the deal”:

“I don’t need the lovin’, nope / so don’t make this somethin’ / See, I’m nothin’ like a girlfriend, no / I’m not like someone I’m supposed to be / and I just want some company, company…”

In addition to the infectious chorus, one particularly fun lyric graces the first verse:

“Hey, yeah, shout out to my booty.”

Final Thoughts

All in all, Tinashe seems to be onto something with “Company.”  It’s fun, flirty, and suggestive.  Nothing serious, Tinashe just wants some “company.”
