Grammy-nominated country artist Thomas Rhett finds common ground with other country dwellers on “What’s Your Country Song.”
Question(s): “Did you grow up on a tractor? / Did your daddy let you drive? / Are you whiskey bent and hell bound?” While the answers to the questions that 🎙 Thomas Rhett asks are a NO on my end, people who are from ‘the country’ most likely will answer, yes. Going into 🎵 “What’s Your Country Song,” a part of me was skeptical how exactly Rhett would execute this concept – could this be an utterly meh record? While “What’s Your Country Song” keeps things relatively simple, it’s also quite enjoyable, even if you’re not a country boy or gal.
“Your Country Song” actually has a more traditional country sound – in a contemporary country sort of way. Thomas Rhett is known for being one of the more adventurous country artists, dipping into pop and R&B. Here, however, like the title suggest, the sound of the record is strictly country. 🎙 Dann Huff and 🎙 Jesse Frasure certainly craft a backdrop that is heavy on guitar and checks off those country boxes. Like the aforementioned lyrics excerpted from the first verse, Rhett asks about country experiences throughout to others who have similar experiences. Given that, he concludes, everyone with such experiences has their own country song. The chorus captures this perfectly:
“Everybody got a small town anthem Everybody got a story to tell Everybody got a hallelujah Everybody been through a little hell When you're rolling down a two-lane highway And you turn your radio on Tell me which one hits you, baby Yeah, what's your country song? Yeah, what's your country song?”
Final Thoughts 💭
All in all, Thomas Rhett ‘does the damn thing’ on “What’s Your Country Song.” It’s nothing brand-new or earth shattering, but it’s a simple, relatable record, period. Furthermore, it’s a welcome sight – rather listening experience – to hear a more traditional record from this adventurous artist. It won’t change your life, but it should enhance your playlist.
