The vibes, the vibes, those Throwback Vibez 🕶️🎶! Throwback Vibez 🕶️🎶 is a column that celebrates awesome songs from the past.  The records that grace Throwback Vibez 🕶️🎶 are older, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re ancient – no fossils 🦴! All genres of music are welcome – we don’t discriminate ‘round here! In the 87th edition of Throwback Vibez 🕶️🎶 (2022), we recollect and reflect on 🎵 “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love”, performed by 🎙 The Spinners.

Theme & Lyrics

“Each night I pray / There will never come a day / When you up and take your love away.” It should go without saying that 🎙 The Spinners are one of the greatest soul groups of all time. One of the collective’s most beloved hits is 🎵 “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love”, which graces their 1973 album, 💿 Spinners.  “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love” peaked at no. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it a surefire, crossover hit. “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love” was written by twin brothers 🎼 ✍ Melvin Steals and 🎼 ✍ Marvin Steals.

Everything about The Spinners’ “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love” is glorious.  The music is lush and warm – the perfect backdrop for a love-oriented soul joint (🎛 Thom Bell serves as producer).  The Spinners, of course, are proponents of the Philly soul movement, so it’s unsurprising they are backed by utterly sublime and refined production. 🎙 Bobby Smith masterfully handles the lead for most of the song, with 🎙 Philippé Wynne providing ad-libs at the end.  Also, sweet female backing vocals add to the reasons why “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love” is a certified classic.  The tuneful chorus is the centerpiece.

“(Could it be I’m falling in love)

With you, baby

(Could it be I’m falling in love)

Woo

(Could it be I’m falling in love)

With you

With you

With you

(With you).”

Final Thoughts 💭

All told, 🎵 “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love” is a once in a lifetime record.  Furthermore, it’s performed by a once in a lifetime group in The Spinners.  Yes, this is a 50-year-old record but guess what? It’s “old but still lit!”
