Dublin rock band The Script delivers a ‘sunny’ winner on ‘Rain,’ the exuberant promo single from new album, ‘Freedom Child.’
Irish rock band The Script have been around for a while. Interestingly, I’ve never personally reviewed any of their albums or singles. Shame on me for ignoring Danny O’Donoghue and company. Alas, there’s a first time for everything. Anyways, The Script release their newest album, Freedom Child on September 1. “Rain” serves as a promo single released in advance of the album.
There’s plenty of sunshine despite the “Rain.” Danny O’Donoghue is a compelling lead vocalist. For the audience stateside, his Irish accent adds to his distinctive tone of voice. Also, the falsetto, while a bit thin, is charming. There’s more sunshine beyond the vocals. The overall sound of the record is interesting with the use of acoustic rhythm guitar and a pronounced Latin/tropical groove on the chorus. There’s a sense of eclecticism here that ultimately ends up being successful. Adding to the pros, the chorus is a selling point as a whole.
In regard to the cons, there’s not much to criticize. Personally, the tropical-pop integration is usually a turn-off because its became oversaturated. While it’s still not my favorite thing, The Script pull it off satisfactorily here. Listening to “Rain,” it doesn’t wow thematically, yet it’s not a deal breaker either.
Final Thoughts
How did my first The Script review go – how did they perform? All in all, Danny and company did well. “Rain” is a solid promo single for Freedom Child. The vocals are well performed and overall, the sound of the record was appealing. This wasn’t game changing, but, the Dublin band gets it done by all means.
