Ahead of their highly anticipated fifth studio album, The Killers issue one final teaser track, “Some Kind of Love.”
After a five-year hiatus, Brandon Flowers fronted Vegas band The Killers return with Wonderful Wonderful. So far, The Killers are off to a rollicking start. On “The Man”, Flowers was feistier and cockier than ever, asserting “nothing can break me down.” Similarly, on second single, “Run for Cover”, him and the rest of the band were turnt up to the nth degree, with the 80s new wave cues going full throttle. Third single “Wonderful Wonderful” was just that. The fourth and final teaser track, “Some Kind of Love” is mysterious, experimental, and nebulous.
“Some Kind of Love” begins enigmatically. Honestly, it has an ethereal quality. The first verse sort of floats, sans a percussive backdrop. Following the first chorus, the groove enters, and the production becomes fuller. There’s still an air of mystery, but a bit more stability. Repetition is the friend of Brandon Flower and company, particularly the number of times the chorus is reiterated following the second verse.
Lyrically, “Some Kind of Love” keeps things simple. Neither verse is particularly transcendent in regards to the words themselves, but the sentiment conveyed is respectable. On the first verse, Flowers sings of “…The faith of a child / Before the world gets in.” On the second, it’s “…The grace of the storm in the desert.” The chorus is even less poetic, simply reiterating the title: “You got some kind of love.” There are more lyrics, interestingly, at the end of the song.
“Can’t do this alone We need you at home There’s so much to see We know that you’re strong.”
Final Thoughts
Ultimately, “Some Kind of Love” is intriguing if odd. There is an experimental vibe, yet lyrically, The Killers aren’t exactly ‘killing it’ with loads of depth.
