Cutting straight to the chase, if you haven’t heard The Kid LAROI, YET, you probably aren’t living under a rock.  First of all, he’s an up-and-coming rapper and singer from Australia.  Secondly, he’s quite young – 16 years old.  How did I happen upon The Kid? Well, it wasn’t his breakthrough “Let Her Go”, but rather, good ole New Music Friday via Spotify.  The Kid enlists Lil Tecca for the banger, “Diva.”

There’s lots to like about “Diva.” Starting with the music, it features sleek production by Dez Wright.  The sound embodies a trap style, set in a minor key.  Beyond the backdrop, the first thing that shines is the infectious, syrupy, and melodic chorus performed by The Kid LAROI. It’s safe to say, it’s quite catchy:

“That lil’ bitch a diva (Yeah), fuck and leave her
My life is a movie directed by Tarantino
Shawty is a dancer, I'm not talking Billie Jean, ho
Oh, woah, fuck, we know, I swear I hate these hoes
We know shawty is an eater
We know (Uh), why she wanna see us
We know that she wanna be us
Oh, woah, fuck, we know, I swear I hate these hoes.”

Judging by the chorus, making bubblegum pop as a teen is clearly out of the door these days.  Teens have been swearing for ages mind you, but now, as a teen, you can be as explicit as you desire to be. Anyways, Lil Tecca arrives on the first verse, delivering a mostly melodic performance. He has a respectable flow, though he’s a bit left-of-center, seemingly slightly off-beat at the end.  As for The Kid LAROI, he returns for the chorus, rapping on the second verse, trading bars with Lil Tecca. It’s effective.

Final Thoughts

“Diva” is an enjoyable record overall by The Kid LAROI featuring Lil Tecca.  All in all, there’s plenty to like and little to lament.  Is this a game changing rap record? No, but it has the makings of a hit, particularly Wright’s production and LAROI’s chorus.
