Grammy-nominated Aussie pop standout The Kid LAROI reflects on a defunct relationship on the beautiful single, “A COLD PLAY.”
“I tried not to listen when they all would say, ayy / This was temporary, and you’d walk away.” Ah, those matters of the heart are being pesky as usual! On “A COLD PLAY”, another advance single from his sophomore album, WATCH THIS!, The Kid LAROI (Charlton Howard) reflects on a defunct relationship. That ever-relatable thing called H-E-A-R-T-B-R-E-A-K has reared its ugly head. Even so, the ugliness is only experienced through the depressed and devastating emotions that accompany heartbreak. It’s worth noting that The Kid LAROI and girlfriend Tate McRae broke up in July 2025.
What makes “A COLD PLAY” beautiful? The backdrop, produced by KBeaZy, is pleasant. It benefits from a chill but potent rhythmic groove and its laidback, mellow pads. There is a cool energy. The cool energy also transfers to the star of the show, The Kid LAROI, who delivers easy-going, emotional vocals. The vibes are hella smooth, while Charlton surprises us with a dash of falsetto. Howard questions and reflects on what was. “‘Cause I still love that’s how I feel to my core,” he sings in the first verse, and continues, “Flew to different states to come see you in between tour / I gave you everything I had and even more.” In the brief second verse, he is regretful, asserting, “I think we just probably should’ve stayed friends / I think that we probably could’ve saved tears.” Following the pre-chorus that mentions the temporary warning given to him by others, in the chorus, The Kid admits, “It’s really hard to accept the fact that I can’t / Fix you.” Do you know what else LAROI admits? “I miss you.” Of course, The Kid LAROI is still a young man… more girls and love will come and go. As a song, “A COLD PLAY” marks another enjoyable moment.
