Grammy-nominated R&B collective The Internet returns after a two-year hiatus with the hella infectious “Roll (Burbank Funk),” where Steve Lacy handles the lead vocals.
The Internet is back (not the actual internet, but the Grammy-nominated R&B collective). Presumably, “Roll (Burbank Funk)” serves as the promo single from their forthcoming album, which will ultimately follow-up Ego Death from 2015. “Roll” is a tight track clocks in at a reasonable three minutes and ten seconds. A soulful, rhythmic ‘West Coast’ groove is the centerpiece of the production. The robust, rhythmic bass line serves as the second layer.
“Listen to your heart
Listen to your heart
What’s it sayin’?
Star shine so bright
Hear it in your heart
They’re up so high
Hear it in your heart.”
Steve Lacy handles the lead vocals, while Syd provides radiant supporting vocals. Lyrically, “Roll (Burbank Funk)” is limited. The chorus is basically the titular lyric, “roll,” repeated over and over and over again. Ultimately, this is a record that’s more concerned with the sound and vibe (again, groovy, soulful, pleasant). Even so, the vocals are strong.
Final Thoughts
All in all, “Roll (Burbank Funk)” is a compelling listen from The Internet. Is it the second coming of funk or R&B? Absolutely not. That said, the groove and the bass line are irresistible. Furthermore, Steve Lacy, assisted by Syd drop solid vocals, few lyrics or not.
