In the 43rd edition of Throwback Vibez (2026), we recollect and reflect on “Build Me Up Buttercup” by The Foundations.
Can you feel those vibes, those surefire Throwback Vibez?! Throwback Vibez is a column that celebrates awesome songs from the past. Ah, there is nothing like a good oldie to get you fired up! The records featured in this column feature gems from the 20th century, with a few exceptions. All genres of music are welcome. In the 43rd edition of Throwback Vibez (2026), we recollect and reflect on “Build Me Up Buttercup” performed by The Foundations.
“Build Me Up Buttercup” slays from the opening tip. It thrives on a fantastic, 1960s soul groove. Essential instruments locked in within the band include drums, percussion, bass, keys, and organ. Beyond the core rhythm section, there are mean, biting horns. The horns bring the attitude to the track. Nerding out, I love the harmonic progression. It has a variety of chords that keeps “Build Me Up Buttercup” engrossing. Of course, the main attraction is the assertive, expressive lead vocals by Colin Young, who replaced former lead vocalist, Clem Curtis. Young masterfully captures this one-sided love, with awesome supporting vocals by The Foundations. “To you, I’m a toy, but I could be the boy you adore,” Young asserts, and adds, “Although you’re untrue, I’m attracted to you all the more / Why do I need you so? (Hey, hey, hey).” We can all say we’d love to know the same thing, but, as the saying goes, the heart wants what it wants. The chorus is the crème de la crème, excerpted earlier and continuing, “And then worst of all (worst of all) / You never call, baby / When you say you will (Say you will) / But I love you still / I need you…” Yikes! “Build Me Up Buttercup” reminds me of the glory days of soul and soul-pop. The music speaks volumes, without necessitating extensive analysis. Awesome vocals, memorable songwriting, and a terrific arrangement make this an unforgettable C-L-A-S-S-I-C.
