The-Dream, Summer Body © Roc NationR&B singer/songwriter The-Dream returns with the sexy, summer-ready single, “Summer Body,” featuring Fabolous.

It’s been a minute since The-Dream released a proper studio album. The last time that Terius Nash was somewhat relevant was in 2013 when he dropped IV Play, arguably the weakest album of his career.  Since then, the singer, songwriter, and producer has served more of a contributor role as opposed to lead artist (He did release a soundtrack/mixtape in 2017 entitled Genesis). He changes that perception with the release of “Summer Body” featuring Fabolous.

In regards to the sound of “Summer Body,” The-Dream sounds as if he’s returned to form.  Most of his music artistically focuses on sex. Likewise, sex is the focus of “Summer Body.”  Vocally, his tenor sounds charged-up and exuberant.  This isn’t an empowering, transcendent vocal by any means, but The-Dream sounds Dream-like.  Yeah.

Now getting that out of the system, is “Summer Body” any good? Eh. So many songs from 2017 are good enough, but lack transcendence and greatness.  We are in a time where memorability is fleeting, and that’s the deal with “Summer Body.” By no means is this song utterly bad, but it’s also not particularly great.  At best, The-Dream has made a comeback that falls right in the middle, which ultimately hurts his cause.

Why does a decent, but not superb song hurt The-Dream? R&B is on the ‘struggle bus’ and The-Dream has been missing in action, so it’s sort of the perfect flop waiting to happen.  Every day, pop and urban male artists objectify females and the songs are often interchangeable.  That’s the case here. There’s just not enough to move this particular joint to the next level.  Furthermore, with no disrespect intended, Fabolous’ ship has sailed.  Even if his assist provided a lift, when’s the last time he’s been truly relevant?

Final Thoughts

All in all, it’s nice to see The-Dream making a comeback.  “Summer Body” isn’t bad, but as aforementioned, it’s not particularly great either. Being in good voice and singing about sex may not be enough to make the talented singer/songwriter relevant again.
