The Chart Scoop: Kendrick Lamar Remains No. 1 on Billboard 200

Kendrick Lamar (‘DAMN.’) spends a second week at no. 1 on the Billboard 200 while Bruno Mars (“That’s What I Like”) moves to no. 1 on the Hot 100.  

Unsurprisingly, on the Billboard 200, Kendrick Lamar remains the artist to beat.  DAMN. spends a second consecutive week at no. 1.  What are other artists likely saying about K-Dot right now? DAMN. him, for selling so many albums.  One artist was able to stop Lamar from topping the Billboard Hot 100 for a second week. Bruno Mars finally earns his first no. 1 single from 24K Magic after “24K Magic” failed to reach the top spot.  Safe to say, folks like “That’s What I Like.”  Besides Kendrick’s dominance on the Billboard 200, and Mars’ ascent to the top on the Hot 100, there’s plenty to highlight from the Billboard 200 and Billboard Hot 100 dated May 13, 2017.

The Billboard 200 Grooves

1. Kendrick Lamar remains the artist to beat as DAMN. spends a second consecutive week at no. 1. Nothing more to say about that.  Kendrick is the DAMN. man.  Yep, having too much fun with this one.

2. Incubus was unable to beat both Drake (More Life) and Ed Sheeran (÷) for the runner-up spot. 8 settles for a no. 4 start.

3. Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol 2 debuts at no. 8. Unfortunately, one soundtrack one-ups it: Moana, which slipped one spot from no. 6 to no. 7 in its 23^rd week on the Billboard 200.

4. Barry Manilow earns the third highest debut on the Billboard 200. This Is My Town: Songs of New York starts at no. 12.

5. Brad Paisley must be disappointed AF. Accustomed to top 10 debuts, Paisley settles for a so-so no. 13 start for his latest studio album, Love and War.

6. blackbear enjoys a better start than his collaborative project mansionz did earlier in 2017. Digital druglord enjoys a no. 14 start.

7. The Fate of the Furious: The Album experienced a tumble this week. After debuting at no. 10, the compilation dips nine spots to no. 19. It could’ve been worse.

8. Sheryl Crow, like Brad Paisley, once enjoyed the thrills of the top 10. Unfortunately for the veteran, she couldn’t even land in the top 20. Yikes! Be Myself bows at no. 22.

9. John Mayer delivered the goods on The Search for Everything. However, his no. 2 debut was only good for one week. This week, Everything finds itself slipping 21 spots to no. 23.

10. The buzz has died down for Beauty and the Beast. The soundtrack takes a 16-spot drop from no. 9 to no. 25 in its seventh charting week.

11. 6LACK is on the rise. FREE 6LACK ascends from no. 71 to no. 34 in its 19^th week. No. 34 marks its highest peak position.

12. A new Bee Gees compilation, Timeless: The All-Time Greatest Hits, lands at no. 41.

13. Pentatonix started out promising with PTX Vol. IV: Classics (EP) at no. 4, but since have seen some serious sales erosion. This week, PTX Vol. IV slips from no. 30 to no. 53.

14. Lord Huron continue their ascent up the charts on the strength of “The Night We Met.” Strange Trails rises from no. 113 to no. 96.

15. Father John Misty released one of the best albums of 2017 with Pure Comedy. Unfortunately, the sales don’t support his phenomenal musicianship. Pure Comedy slides from no. 129 to no. 141.  That’s not bad when examined by itself, but Pure Comedy started at no. 10 and has only charted for three short weeks.

The Billboard Hot 100 Jewels

1. Bruno Mars finally made it over the hump. “That’s What I Like” ascends from no. 3 to no. 1 this week on the Billboard Hot 100.

2. Kendrick Lamar’s stay atop the Billboard Hot 100 was short. “Humble” slips from no. 1 to no. 3. As expected, Ed Sheeran remains in the runner-up spot with “Shape of You.”

3. Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee, and Justin Bieber have a hit on their hand. “Despacito” ascends from no. 9 to no. 4 this week.

4. Kygo and Selena Gomez climb into the top 10 with “It Ain’t Me,” which rises from no. 13 to no. 10.

5. James Arthur continues to see his profile elevate. “Say You Won’t Let Go” rises from no. 17 to no. 13. Safe to say, “Say You Won’t Let Go” has become one of radio’s most played numbers.

6. Khalid breaks into the top 20, finally! “Location” ascends nine spots from no. 25 to no. 16.

7. Calvin Harris sees his star-studded single “Slide” on the rise (ascends from no. 44 to no. 30).

8. Country musician Brett Young continues to move up with “In Case You Didn’t Know” (rises from no. 45 to no. 34).

9. Things haven’t gone particularly quick for Imagine Dragons with promo single “Believer.” That said, it rises 14 spots this week from no. 51 to no. 37.

10. Shawn Mendes debuts at no. 44 with his newest single, “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back.”

11. Childish Gambino continues to rise with “Redbone,” which ascends from no. 56 to no. 45 in its 19^th charting week.

12. G-Eazy and Kehlani sees single “Good Life” (Fate of the Furious: The Album) ascend 17 spots from no. 76 to no. 59.

13. Machine Gun Kelly is on his way to another potential hit as “At My Best” (featuring Hailee Steinfeld) jumps 35 spots from no. 98 to no. 63.

14. Lana Del Rey debuts at no. 64 with her latest single “Lust for Life,” featuring The Weeknd.

15. Charlie Puth calls attention to himself at no. 68.

16. blackbear sends “do re mi” to the Hot 100 at no. 87.

17. Paramore lands at no. 90 with “Hard Times.”
