The Chainsmokers release one final single, āThe One,ā ahead of the release of their full-length debut album, āMemoriesā¦Do Not Open.ā
The big moment has come for The Chainsmokers ā the release of their debut album, Memoriesā¦Do Not Open. Ā After a number of hit singles ā most of all āCloserā ā Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart drop their first full-length.Ā Ahead of Memories, three promo singles were issued: āParis,ā āSomething Just Like Thisā (featuring Coldplay), and āThe One.āĀ Ā
Ā āThe Oneā features many of the characteristics of The Chainsmokersā previous work.Ā Romance remains a key component, for one thing.Ā Like āParis,ā Taggart carries the lead vocal duties with his distinct pipes.Ā Once more, an uncredited female vocalist assists.Ā While some of itĀ donāt feel the least bit danceable, the electronic elements arrive full-fledged closer to the end of the song.Ā Ultimately, much of āThe Oneā remains familiar, in the context of the duo.
Still, there are some departures.Ā āThe Oneā may be the least enthusiastic Chainsmokers record yet.Ā Clearly, the relationship is over, hence, setting up vibes of disappointment.Ā This is evident from Taggartās apologetic opening lines:
āYou know, Iām sorry / I wonāt make it to your party / Got caught up in my own selfishness / It wonāt let me be a part of this.ā
The chorus serves as confirmation for the end:
āDown and down we go / Weāll torch this place we know / Before one of us takes a chance / And breaks this, I wonāt be the one / No, I wonāt be the one.ā
Something else new on āThe Oneā is that Drew has the potty mouth.Ā Basically, his utterance of the f-bomb is the only reason why this record gets the parental advisory sticker.Ā But āF*ck it, yeah, I said it.ā The context of the line is more analysis of the fractured romance.
Final Thoughts
So, how does āThe Oneā stack up? All in all, itās respectableĀ but doesnāt supplant the best work by The Chainsmokers.Ā Both āParisā and āSomething Just Like Thisā are more engaging, but give the boys credit for providing some contrast.Ā Still, āThe Oneā doesnāt feel like it has the same potential to be a hit like previous singles, but donāt count it out.
