The Chainsmokers release one final single, “The One,” ahead of the release of their full-length debut album, ‘Memories…Do Not Open.’
The big moment has come for The Chainsmokers – the release of their debut album, Memories…Do Not Open. After a number of hit singles – most of all “Closer” – Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart drop their first full-length. Ahead of Memories, three promo singles were issued: “Paris,” “Something Just Like This” (featuring Coldplay), and “The One.”
“The One” features many of the characteristics of The Chainsmokers’ previous work. Romance remains a key component, for one thing. Like “Paris,” Taggart carries the lead vocal duties with his distinct pipes. Once more, an uncredited female vocalist assists. While some of it don’t feel the least bit danceable, the electronic elements arrive full-fledged closer to the end of the song. Ultimately, much of “The One” remains familiar, in the context of the duo.
Still, there are some departures. “The One” may be the least enthusiastic Chainsmokers record yet. Clearly, the relationship is over, hence, setting up vibes of disappointment. This is evident from Taggart’s apologetic opening lines:
“You know, I’m sorry / I won’t make it to your party / Got caught up in my own selfishness / It won’t let me be a part of this.”
The chorus serves as confirmation for the end:
“Down and down we go / We’ll torch this place we know / Before one of us takes a chance / And breaks this, I won’t be the one / No, I won’t be the one.”
Something else new on “The One” is that Drew has the potty mouth. Basically, his utterance of the f-bomb is the only reason why this record gets the parental advisory sticker. But “F*ck it, yeah, I said it.” The context of the line is more analysis of the fractured romance.
Final Thoughts
So, how does “The One” stack up? All in all, it’s respectable but doesn’t supplant the best work by The Chainsmokers. Both “Paris” and “Something Just Like This” are more engaging, but give the boys credit for providing some contrast. Still, “The One” doesn’t feel like it has the same potential to be a hit like previous singles, but don’t count it out.
