The Chainsmokers, Paris © ColumbiaThe Chainsmokers return in 2017 with another likely hit single, “Paris.” “Paris” is enjoyable, but not particularly game changing.

The Chainsmokers had a huge year in 2016.  Hit after hit came from the hands of Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart. They begin 2017 with yet another new single, “Paris.”

On “Paris,” Andrew Taggart once more offers up his vocals. Taggart has an interesting voice, but that doesn’t necessarily yield a great deal of personality. In regards to songwriting, it’s more of the same for The Chainsmokers. Ultimately, it’s in a similar vein to both “Closer” and “All We Know.” Situational-songwriting seems to be a trend for the DJs lately, evidenced on the first verse, and later the second.

“We were staying in Paris / to get away from your parents / and I thought, ‘Wow, / If I could take this in a shot right now / I don’t think that we could work this out…”

“Paris” uses more of pop-rock sound with electric guitar.  While it isn’t a complete departure, it does contrast the duo’s previous work in that regard.  Still, there are familiar characteristics.  Once more, Taggart is paired with a female vocalist, Emily Warren.

Expectedly, “Paris” eventually grows dynamically towards the end, with the respectable expansion of the production. Undeniably, it is filled with emotion.  The chorus is unsurprisingly catchy – who would expect any less?

“If we go down then we go down together / they’ll say you could do anything / they’ll say that I was clever / if we go down then we go down together / we’ll get away with everything / let’s show them that we are better.”

Final Thoughts

All in all, “Paris” will likely to be another hit for The Chainsmokers. That said, it doesn’t bring anything new to the table.  It is sound, but not game changing.
