Drew Taggart of The Chainsmokers keeps on singing in utterly pessimistic fashion on the duo’s third single of 2018, “Everybody Hates Me.”
“I walk into the club like, everybody hates me.” Once again, The Chainsmokers are back. After releasing singles “Sick Boy” and “You Owe Me”, Alex Pall and Drew Taggart drop “Everybody Hates Me.” Much like the two singles that precede it, “Everybody Hates Me” has a darker vibe. By darker, there’s a degree of pessimism conveyed.
“Yeah, let’s do it again but, uh, this time, uh, let’s go full psycho.” That’s the intro that kicks off “Everybody Hates Me.” It leads into more vocals from Drew, which tend to be divisive to say the least. Some accept his instrument, while others criticize it heavily. Here, Taggart has a rasp about his pipes, clearly lacking finesse or refinement. It’s not deal breaking, but, there are more accomplished singers – Drew might even admit that himself.
As aforementioned, there’s clear pessimism, with Drew clearly in a mood. Lines like “Yeah, I just wanna drink tequila with my friends” or “I’m so defeated, I just want this shit to end” sums up the hate that he feels. If it didn’t a chorus, followed by a drop seals the deal.
“So, I walk into the club like, everybody hates me…
I’m talkin’ to myself, shit, now they think I’m crazy…
Like everybody hates me.”
On the second verse, Taggart offers more of the same. Generally, the rest of the song follows a predictable script, even the bridge, which reiterates the key lyric. That said, this is a well-produced record, blending pop with elements of dance. It’s not game changing, but it’s sufficient.
Final Thoughts
Ultimately, The Chainsmokers seem to be going for a particular vibe three singles into their forthcoming project. There’s nothing wrong with that. “Everybody Hates Me” has its moments, just like “Sick Boy” and “You Owe Me.” Is it the second coming of pop or EDM? No. Enjoyable, but by no means game changing.
