The Beaches, No Hard Feelings [📷: The Beaches / AWAL Recordings America, Inc]Canadian alternative rock band The Beaches deliver an authentic, relatable, and thoughtfully penned queer song with “Lesbian Of The Year.”

“Can’t be your gold star / ‘Cause I just got this far.” Oh, snap! Canadian alternative rock band The Beaches (Jordan Miller, Kylie Miller, Leandra Earl, and Eliza Enman-McDaniel) kick off the ear- and eye-catchingly titled “Lesbian Of The Year” off with a bang. Lead singer Jordan Miller continues singing about the queer experience in the first verse, “Mom thinks I’ll find a man / She’ll never understand…” “Lesbian Of The Year” is the ninth track from collective’s 2025 album, No Hard Feelings. The Beaches penned this superb queer, coming-out song with producers Sam Willows and ZALE (Zale Epstein).

The sound is celestial.  The 1980s vibes are vibing hard, with a calm, cool, and collected musical backdrop.  Jordan excels with her rich, smooth vocals.  The melodies are legato and tuneful.  The lyrics are thought-provoking, particularly during the reflective second verse: “Parasocial life / I’m no socialite / Wish I knew my younger self / She could’ve used my help.” Jordan ups the ante vocally during the chorus, the centerpiece of the record.  Like the verses, the chorus is tuneful, with memorable lyrics.

Better late than never

Tegan told me not to worry

Piecing it together happened in a hurry

Lesbian of the year, how the hell did I get here?”

The song, specifically the lyric, “better late than never,” references guitarist Leandra Earl coming out later in life.  Authentic, expressive, and sincere, “Lesbian Of The Year” is a marvelous alternative record from The Beaches.  For anyone who has come out later in life, it is a relatable song.
