Although flawed, The 1975 has its share of moments on single “Love It If We Made It,” characterized by its loudness and multiple instances of shock value.
“We’re f**king in a car, shooting heroin / Saying controversial things just for the hell of it.” Wow! Those are the first two lines of the first verse of “Love It If We Made It,” the second single of 2018 courtesy of The 1975. Clearly, Matthew Healy and company are trying some new things on their forthcoming album. That was obvious with their previous single, “Give Yourself a Try”. The question is, is the new look a good look? Honestly, the jury’s still out.
Prior to the first of many incredibly loud, edgy moments from “Love It If We Made It,” The 1975 does a great job of establishing a driving rhythm. This isn’t a fast cut, but the rhythm helps to keep things moving. Another selling point is the energy of Healy. Sure, he’s overindulgent and again, absolutely too loud, but at least he’s energetic in his execution, which is particularly great on the simple, but effective chorus.
“And I’d love it if we made it / Yes, I’d love it if we made it.”
The thing about “Love it If We Made It” that really hurts it is that it feels like The 1975 are trying to cramp absolutely too much into one song. There’s simply very little breathing space and not enough dynamic variation. Yes, loud music can be killer, but it can also literally kill what could’ve been a potentially successful record. “Love It if We Made It” is certainly alive, but would benefit from some tweaks. Healy is all over the place, referencing Lil Peep, Jesus, and Donald Trump. But, to his credit, he’s got a point as he asserts at the end of each verse, “Modernity has failed us.”
Final Thoughts
Hmm, it’s tough to know what to make of the forthcoming The 1975 album. “Love It If We Made It” has its moments, but it’s also ‘a bit much’ at the same time. Not bad, not great, but somewhere in the middle in my humble opinion.
