“Don’t fuck it, you Muppet!” That’s one of many memorable lyrics from 🎵 “I’m In Love With You”. “I’m In Love With You” arrives as the third single from 💿 Being Funny In a Foreign Land, the 2022 studio album by 🎙 The 1975.  As the title suggests, 🎙 Matthew Healy is (or was) in love – he’s found that special someone.  “I’m In Love With You” ends up being an interesting record.

“I’m in love with you, I- I- I- I- I-…” Yeah, that repetitive line from the chorus gives it away, haha.  The chorus is the centerpiece, but the verses establish this relationship.  There’s never any doubt that Healy is in love himself (the audience is informed, obviously), but he has a difficult time expressing his feelings: “Oh, there’s something I’ve been meaning to / Say to you, baby / But I just can’t do it.” With instances of struggling to say it during the two verses, the second pre-chorus features another memorable set of lyrics: “You show me your / Black girl thing / Pretending that I know what it is (I wasn’t listening) / I apologize, you meet my eyes…” Interesting! It seems that Healy is referencing his ex-girlfriend, 🎙 FKA twigs, who was black. Beyond that, those lyrics speak to cultural differences in interracial relationships, as well as some ineptness and naivety on Healy’s part.  Those lyrics you can read in a number of different ways which is intriguing.

Final Thoughts 💭

x o x oAfter analyzing 🎵 “I’m In Love With You,” I was slightly more impressed with it. Upon initial listen, I found it to be respectable and enjoyable enough, but not earth-shattering.  All told, this is a relatable, worthwhile song about having trouble expressing feelings regarding love.  It won’t change your life, but it’s worth checking out.  Again, “Don’t fuck it, you Muppet!”
