The 1975 returns with their first new single of 2018, “Give Yourself a Try.” Matthew Healy has some worthwhile things to say, but there’s a nuisance – a ‘production annoyance.’
“You learn a couple of things when you get to my age / Like friends don’t lie and it all taste the same in the dark.” It was only a matter of time – The 1975 are back! That’s right, Matthew Healy and company drop their first single of 2018, “Give Yourself a Try.” “Give Yourself A Try” follows a couple of quietly released singles in 2017 – Sade cover “By Your Side” and original, “Milk.” Likely, “Give Yourself a Try” will appear on the band’s forthcoming third studio album. So, how does “Give Yourself a Try” work out for Healy and the boys?
Continuing the aforementioned quote from the first verse, Matthew Healy sings, “When your vinyl and your coffee collection is a sign of the times / You’re getting spiritually enlightened at 29.” Lyrically and thematically, Matthew Healy reflects on adulthood and most importantly, living life to the fullest. Throughout the course of the song, he looks back on his past, how he’s matured, and how he plans on living as opposed to going back to being “25 and afraid to go outside.” Notably, he references a girl – a fan of the band – who committed suicide at 16, likely as motivation to embrace trueness to self and living.
The message of “Give Yourself a Try” is one of the selling points. No rubs in that regard. Furthermore, Healy’s vocals sound great, if the slightest bit overpowered by the production. Speaking of the production, surprisingly, it was what irked me the most. It’s not the beat or the bass line, but rather the distorted, looped, upper register guitar grows annoying. This just happens too many times and the listener rarely escapes it.
Final Thoughts
Is the repetitive, treble guitar lines a deal break for “Give Yourself a Try?” It’s annoying, but you can’t discount the other pros that bode well for Healy and company. All in all, it’s a respectable record, save for that blasted loop!
