“We got love, love, love / You better believe it.” Ah, R&B sensation Teyana Taylor originally dropped her single, “We Got Love,” in 2019.  She returns with a new version in 2020, which adds the legendary Ms. Lauryn Hill.  No, Hill doesn’t have a gargantuan role on “We Got Love,” but her interlude adds some spice to this love-centric, socially conscious, and reflective number (“You keep your focus / You keep your sense of love / And you keep your sense of purpose…”).  Ultimately, “We Got Love” is a good look, rather good sound for Taylor.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from “We Got Love” is how reflective and thankful the record is.  Teyana Taylor essentially counts her many blessings, none of which are about clout or drip of any sort. Taylor focuses on family, self-love, and positive, uplifting vibes. A prime example of the transcendent message arrives on the chorus:

“Throw your hands up
Play catch with the hunnids
Love is the new money
I’m just chillin’ with the homies, home is where the heart is.”

Of course, the incredibly catchy bridge, performed by The Younghearts, was excerpted at the top of the review, in all its love centricity.  Besides the thoughtful message, Teyana Taylor shines vocally with her robust, low register vocals.  Consider it a cherry on top, alongside the distinct production work by Kanye West, BoogzDaBeast, E. Vax, Mike Dean, Seven Aurelius, and Johan Lenox.  The backdrop is definitely a contrast to the dominant sounds of R&B and hip-hop in 2020, which is refreshing.  This is very much a Kanye West-influenced joint.

Final Thoughts

Are a lot of folks talking about “We Got Love?” No, but perhaps they should be – it’s equally entertaining and thoughtful.  Rarely, do we think of R&B being transcendent in theme in modern times, but “We Got Love” certainly takes that next step where so many records fail.  A winner? You bet!
