โ€œLooks like another love T.K.O.โ€ The vibes, the vibes, those Throwback Vibez ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ๐ŸŽถ! Throwback Vibez ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ๐ŸŽถ is a column that celebrates awesome songs from the past.ย  The records that grace this column are older, but that doesnโ€™t necessarily mean that theyโ€™re ancient โ€“ no fossils ๐Ÿฆด! All genres of music are welcome. In the 28th edition of Throwback Vibez ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ๐ŸŽถ (2023), we recollect and reflect on ๐ŸŽต โ€œLove T.K.O.โ€, performed by ๐ŸŽ™ Teddy Pendergrass.

Teddy Pendergrass, TP [๐Ÿ“ท: Sony Music Entertainment]โ€œThink Iโ€™d better let it go / Looks like another love T.K.O.โ€ Woo! The definitive version of ๐ŸŽต โ€œLove T.K.O.โ€ belongs to the late, great soul singer, ๐ŸŽ™ Teddy Pendergrass (1950 โ€“ 2010).ย  Teddy Pendergrass was the man โ€“ he had some serious pipes! Even after a devastating automobile accident, Pendergrass managed to reclaim his voice. That said, โ€œLove T.K.O.,โ€ a no. 44 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 from his 1980 album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ TP, was NOT originally recorded by him ๐Ÿคฏ! The original version of this classic, penned by ๐ŸŽผ โœ Cecil Womack and Eddie โ€œGipโ€ Noble, was recorded in 1980 as well by the late ๐ŸŽ™ David Oliver (1942 โ€“ 1982). Even though Oliver recorded and released โ€œLove T.K.O.โ€ first, it is the Teddy Pendergrass version that is most well-known.

classicAs far as the sound of โ€œLove T.K.O.โ€ it continues to bear the lush, smooth, symphonic elements that dominated the 1970s.ย  Sure, the 1980s would usher in a different sound for R&B, but the Philly soul sensibilities remain well intact. With the plight of love as the central theme, Teddy Pendergrass has the perfect inspiration โ€“ prime fuel for the fire.ย  In the first verse, he lays out how agonizing love is, yet, despite many Ls, โ€œTold myself time and time again / This time Iโ€™m gonna win.โ€ Honestly, thatโ€™s how many of us, particularly hopeless romantics, view the chase that is love.ย  Sadly, in the second verse, TP is โ€œTryinโ€™ to hold on, faith is gone / Itโ€™s just another sad song.โ€ Of course, the centerpiece is the chorus, which is simplistic but telling. Pendergrass knows he must move on from this romance which is clearly going nowhere. Sure, heโ€™s on the struggle bus with love, but there is no struggle when it comes to the sheer magnificence of ๐ŸŽต โ€œLove T.K.O.โ€
