The vibes, the vibes, those Throwback Vibez ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ๐ŸŽถ! Throwback Vibez ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ๐ŸŽถ is a column that celebrates awesome songs from the past.ย  The records that grace this column are older, but that doesnโ€™t necessarily mean that theyโ€™re ancient โ€“ no fossils ๐Ÿฆด! All genres of music are welcome. In the 179th edition of Throwback Vibez ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ๐ŸŽถ (2023), we recollect and reflect on ๐ŸŽต โ€œJoyโ€, performed by ๐ŸŽ™ Teddy Pendergrass.

Teddy Pendergrass, Joy [๐Ÿ“ท: Elektra / Asylum]โ€œItโ€™s a joy / Joy to be / To be near you / I want you here with me.โ€ Woo! ๐ŸŽ™ Teddy Pendergrass (1950 โ€“ 2010) was one of the most dynamic soul singers of all time. Songs like ๐ŸŽต โ€œClose The Doorโ€ and ๐ŸŽต โ€œTurn Off The Lightsโ€ mark his high watermark, not to mention his tenure with ๐ŸŽ™ Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes. ย Prior to a paralyzing accident in 1982, his instrument was at its best.ย  Following his musical setbacks due to the life changing accident, Pendergrass managed to make a comeback, which is incredibly impressive.ย  His voice wasnโ€™t quite the same, but it was still INCREDIBLE. While ๐ŸŽต โ€œJoyโ€, from his 1988 album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Joy failed to make a big splash on the pop charts (peaked at no. 77), it topped the R&B charts for two weeks ๐Ÿ’ช.

โ€œLife is too damn short to let you get away

Iโ€™m here to say I need your love, oh baby

Thereโ€™s no greater pleasure than you give to me

Hear me, baby, I want you to know.โ€

โ€œJoyโ€ sounds different from the Philly soul tunes Teddy recorded in the 1970s and early 80s.ย  This track is more contemporary and idiomatic of the mid-, late 80s R&B sound. Itโ€™s also poppier.ย  The groove is electrifying, anchored by that beloved boxy drum programming ๐Ÿฅ. ย Beyond the drums, rhythm is a defining feature of this ๐ŸŽ› Reggie Calloway and Vincent Calloway production.ย  The synth bass line is lit ๐Ÿ”ฅ. The rhythmic guitar ๐ŸŽธ is also lit ๐Ÿ”ฅ, with the tone standing out as much as the riffs.ย  Also, the keyboards ๐ŸŽน and programming keep โ€œJoyโ€ picturesque. Not a total deviation from the soul of old, there are sweet, articulated horns ๐ŸŽบ and strings ๐ŸŽป in the mix, too. This backdrop is perfect for Pendergrass, who shines vocally, if in a more modest sense compared to the past. Still, that tone is once-in-a-lifetime.ย  Furthermore, what isnโ€™t the least bit diminished is his personality, not to mention that TP sex appeal ๐Ÿคฉ! Case in point: โ€œYouโ€™re my fantasy, no other love can set me free / Iโ€™m glad to know that youโ€™re all mine, mine.โ€ Indeed, Teddy, indeed. ๐ŸŽต โ€œJoyโ€ = such a joy to listen to!
