Takeoff, Last Memory [Photo Credit: Quality Control / Motown / Capitol]Takeoff of Southern rap trio Migos, drops his debut solo single, “Last Memory.”  The results are respectable, but not ‘earth shattering.’

It seems as if Migos seem to be exploring solo options, at least to an extent.  Quavo was the first to drop his debut solo album, QUAVO HUNCHO, with mixed results.  While a Takeoff album hasn’t been announced, the rapper has released a single, “Last Memory.”

The brief “Last Memory” begins mysteriously with a looped vocal synth, which recurs throughout the course of the record.  The beat that anchors “Last Memory” is solid, though nothing to crazy. It’s definitely a fitting backdrop for Takeoff.  Early on, he delivers a catchy hook.

“Woke up this morning can’t remember nothing

Two bitches just flew in from London

Last thing I remember they callin’ me daddy

The mattress was covered in money…”

Naturally, the hook is nothing ‘brand-new’ or particularly innovative. Regardless, it works effectively. Beyond the chorus, there’s a post-chorus, which is built on flexing rather than substance.

“Coupe with the kit, cop it

Pull with a stick, stop it…

Old hunnids, pockets rotted…

NASA takeoff with the rocket.”

Following the chorus and post-chorus, there’s one big verse. Like the sections that precede it, the verse features a beautiful flow, but little depth in regards to bars.  One thing that Takeoff does well is vocal inflections and how he changes the pitch of his voice throughout “Last Memory.”

Final Thoughts

All in all, Takeoff has a respectable single on his hands with “Last Memory.”  Is it a record we’ll be talking about for years to years to come? No.  Honestly, it would be surprising if the rapper generated much buzz with this record at all. The flow is a selling point, as is the production, but little is accomplished when it’s all said and done.
