SZA, with the help of Ty Dolla $ign and The Neptunes, drops a captivating new single, “Hit Different,” that does indeed ‘hit different.’
Grammy-nominated R&B artist SZA has returned – what a glorious day! She doesn’t drop new music all by herself though. She enlists the one-and only Ty Dolla $ign, who continues to be a ubiquitous presence in R&B and hip-hop. Furthermore, she calls upon The Neptunes to get behind the boards on “Hit Different.” Honestly, we know anytime that The Neptunes are in charge of the backdrop, the record certainly ‘hits different!’
Starting with The Neptunes, indeed, they give “Hit Different” a unique sound from the onset. I love the beat as well as the chordal backdrop. While sometimes, they go too far to the left with their quirky, left of center productions, this one feels perfect. Beyond that backdrop, Ty Dolla $ign sets the vibe with the chorus at the top of the joint. As always, I love the distinct tone of his voice. He also has some soulful ad-libs, which prove to be a perfect fit for this particular. The chorus is repetitive and simple, but highly effective.
“Hit different, hit different ...Hit different when I’m sittin’ here Alone all by myself Hit different when I think you might be With somebody else.”
So, with having spoken about The Neptunes and Ty Dolla $ign, what about the main attraction? As always, SZA delivers fine vocals. She sounds clear, sings with agility, and sounds absolutely beautiful. The R&B singer sings about being in love in what is clearly a non-monogamous relationship where neither her nor her boyfriend are exclusive – woo! She never has to over sing, yet she’s incredibly compelling, nonetheless.
Final Thoughts
All in all, SZA shines on “Hit Different,” ‘with a little help from her musical friends.’ Honestly, there’s something truly hypnotic about this particular R&B record. Indeed, “Hit Different” does ‘hit different.’ NO CAP!
