While “Preach” has its ‘fair share of moments’, Swizz Beatz, assisted by Dipset rapper Jim Jones doesn’t exactly reinvent rap, let alone the wheel.
“Preach / Oh my, oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh.” OMG, Swizz Beatz is back! After announcing his 10-track LP Poison (November 2, 2018), and enlisting Lil Wayne for the promo single (“Pistol on My Side”), and Young Thug for the second (“25 Soldiers”), the veteran hip-hop producer returns with his third advanced single, “Preach,” featuring Jim Jones. The results are okay, but by no means earth shattering.
While “Preach” may not change the world by being transcendent, it has it’s selling points. First and foremost, the production work is pretty doggone cool. Swizz Beatz keeps things rhythmic and minimalist – keyboard, vocal synth lines, and an anchoring beat. This is ample ‘fuel for the fire’ of Jim Jones, whose ever-unique, underrated flow works superbly with the distinct, quirky production. In addition to his work behind the boards, Swizz Beatz also adds some vocals on the utterly simple, aforementioned hook.
Final Thoughts
If you reread the previous paragraph, it seems there’s plenty of positives regarding “Preach.” Yes, it certainly has its redeeming qualities. That said, there simply isn’t much to “Preach.” Jim Jones has bars, and Swizz Beatz has beats and a chorus, but, it’s definitely not a record we’ll be talking about for years to come. It probably won’t receive that much love past this year if we’re keeping it 100.
