Swizz Beatz, Poison [Photo Credit: Epic]Rap super producer Swizz Beatz enlists Grammy-winning rapper Lil Wayne for “Pistol on My Side,” the promo single for his upcoming album, ‘Poison.’

“Swizzy on the beat, I beat your ass it like policia.” Swizz Beatz is back! Not only is he back with a new single, “Pistol on My Side,” but the veteran hip-hop producer has a new album as well.  Yes, his 10-track LP Poison hits the shelves on November 2, 2018.  On the promo single, Swizz is assisted by Lil Wayne, who has his own album in the works.  The results are so-so.

On positive regarding “Pistol on My Side” is the fact that it’s a brief record. Two-and-a-half minutes definitely doesn’t provide much duration, yet, it’s perfect in this context.  Another pro is the beat, which is typical of Swizz Beatz, co-produced with araabMUZIK. Additionally, lovely piano works well in tandem with the beat. Lil Wayne naturally shouts out the legendary hip-hop producer, as excerpted from his second verse above.

Following the Swizz Beatz-helmed intro, Lil Wayne drops a relatively-catchy hook:

“Pistol on my side, trigger finger on the job
Pistol on my side, trigger finger on the job
Pistol on my side, leave a n***a on his side
Mr. Always High, but ni**a, you can call me ‘Slime’.”

Yeah, Weezy doesn’t exactly offer up anything brand-new, innovative, or incredibly shocking. But hey, at least he’s back, right? Right! On the first verse, he references luxury (“Pockets fatter than a greedy n***a on a diet”), sex (“Pistol in my briefs, you don’t wanna get this brief message”), and violence (“Pistol on my side, I’m talkin’ bout the Army kind.”) On the second verse, it’s more of the same – guns, drugs (“Sugar sweet codeine, it ain’t purple, then I’m barfing”), and violence.

Final Thoughts

All in all, “Pistol on My Side” is more forgettable than memorable.  For both Swizz Beatz and Lil Wayne, both have had much more important moments in their respectable careers.  This isn’t necessarily a throwaway, but it’s certainly not elite.
