Question: ā€œDo you remember when you were young and wanted to set the world on fire?ā€ Thatā€™s what Laura Jane Grace asks on ā€œI Was a Teenage Anarchist,ā€Ā one of many, MANY captivating teenage-themed songs.Ā No, ā€œI Was a Teenage Anarchistā€ didnā€™t get an official spot on this list of songs all about teens, but just think of how many great, rebellious, adolescent standouts are omitted, sigh.Ā Still, Sweet 6Teen: 16 Teenage Songs features some great songs courtesy of Drake, Katy Perry,Ā Khalid,Ā My Chemical Romance, andĀ Nirvana among many others.

1. Jorja Smith, ā€œTeenage Fantasyā€

Lost & FoundĀ ā€¢Ā FAMM ā€¢Ā 2018

Jorja Smith, Lost & Found Ā© FAMMā€œYou werenā€™t the boy I thought I knewā€¦You were the topic of my lunch timesā€¦ [Iā€™d] get upset when you didnā€™t text back.ā€Ā  The first verse of the soulful ā€œTeenage Fantasyā€ accurately covers the plight of teenage love, sigh. Rising British R&B artist Jorja Smith wrote ā€œTeenage Fantasyā€ when was 16.

She sums up the fantasy on the chorus:

ā€œWe all want a teenage fantasy
Want it when we canā€™t have it
When we got it we donā€™t seem to want it.ā€

2. Madison Beer, ā€œTeenager in Loveā€

As She PleasesĀ ā€¢Ā Access ā€¢ 2018

Madison Beer, As She Pleases Ā© Accessā€œYou call me queen / Youā€™re in ripped jeans / And you just pulled up to a love song.ā€Ā  On ā€œTeenager in Love,ā€ 19-year old Madison Beer is infatuated to the nth degree.Ā  Everything about her suitor is perfect on this vintage sounding pop number, exemplified on the memorable chorus.

ā€œYou make me feel like a teenager in love
And you make me feel like I'll be forever young
And I donā€™t want no, nobody else
I don't want no, nobody else.ā€

3 & 4. Khalid, ā€œAmerican Teenā€ &ā€œ8TEENā€

American TeenĀ ā€¢ RCA ā€¢ 2017

Khalid, American Teen Ā© RCAā€œAmerican Teenā€Ā opens American TeenĀ bubbly and exuberant in sound.Ā  The single borrows from 80s pop and urban cues as its basis. Set in major key, the optimism is formidable.Ā  Vocally, while Khalid is firmly invested, without forcing things. Lyrically, the vibes are positive, as Khalid explores life and the great opportunities ahead of him.

ā€œā€˜Cause this is our year
So wake me up in the Spring
While Iā€™m high off my American dream
We donā€™t always say what we mean
Itā€™s the life of an American teen.ā€

Ultimately, the opener sets the tone for the album. ā€œ8TEENā€ is a welcome change of pace for Khalid, following a trio of brokenhearted songs on American Teen. This feels like a companion cut to the aforementioned title track, embracing a similar overall sound.Ā  On the bright, synth-driven ā€œ8TEEN,ā€ he reflects on being youngĀ and dumb.Ā  The signature line comes on the chorus: ā€œSo, letā€™s do all the stupid shit that young kids do.ā€

5. Lady Antebellum, ā€œTeenage Heartā€

Heart Break ā€¢ Capitol Nashville ā€¢Ā 2017

Lady Antebellum, Heart Break Ā© Capitol Nashvilleā€œWe were circus lights and cannonballs / We were way too high to ever fall.ā€ Sigh, to be a teenager again.Ā  Hillary Scott,Charles Kelley, and Drew Haywood reminisce back to being young and fearless on the energetic and exuberant ā€œTeenage Heart.ā€ Ā Specifically, Lady Antebellum reminisces back to a youthful, teenage relationship, where ā€œWe thought that we would last forever / Thought our love would never fade.ā€ Ultimately, those teenage years only last so long.

6. Infinite bisous, ā€œTeen Sexā€

W/ Love ā€¢Ā tasty morsels ā€¢Ā 2017

Infinite Bisous, W/ Love Ā©Ā tasty morselsAlternative musician Infinite bisous leaves little to the imagination in regards to the title of his entry onto this list, ā€œTeen Sex.ā€ Ā Even though the title suggests explicitness in terms of, well coitus, thatā€™s not particularly the case lyrically.

The first verse looks a little something like this:

ā€œDownstairs thereā€™s a party,
Wonā€™t you stay for me?
Weā€™re safe for the moment,
Love for you.ā€

The chorus simply reiterates the title, while verse two, similar to the first, is much more innocent and simple than expected.Ā  Ultimately, the phrase ā€œteenage sexā€ is uttered 16 times.Ā  Thatā€™s a lot of sex. Instrumentally, the vibe is indeed sexy.

7. Drake, ā€œTeenage Feverā€

More LifeĀ ā€¢Ā OVO Sound ā€¢Ā 2017

Drake, More Life Ā© Cash Moneyā€œI met someone new last night and we kicked it / And Iā€™m going back there tonight / And you know whatā€™s on my mind, this time.ā€ ā€œTeenage Feverā€ represents one of Drakeā€™s smoother moments on his playlist-album, More Life.Ā  Drizzy sings about his feelings about her.Ā ā€œOut of body / Thatā€™s just how I feel when Iā€™m around you, shawty.ā€ Clearly, heā€™s infatuated, feeling ā€˜some type of wayā€™ to the point he sings, ā€œThis shit feels like teenage fever.ā€

8. Blink-182, ā€œTeenage Satellitesā€

CaliforniaĀ ā€¢ BMG Rights Management ā€¢Ā 2016

Blink-182, California (Deluxe) Ā© BMG Rights ManagementBlink-182 gets into the teenage action with the cleverly-penned ā€œTeenage Satellites.ā€ Ā While it is clever, itā€™s also quite familiar.

ā€œWe are a slow descent
Forgotten astronauts
We are an avalanche
Weā€™re just an afterthoughtā€

What makes ā€œTeenage Satellitesā€ familiar isnā€™t the song itself, but the fact that the teenage plight is inspiration once again.Ā In other words, this is an enjoyable, successful number that probably wonā€™t boggle many minds.

9. Neon Trees, ā€œTeenager in Loveā€

Pop PsychologyĀ ā€¢ Island ā€¢Ā 2014

Neon Trees, Pop Psychology Ā©Ā Mercuryā€œThere was a point of no return / And I never looked back ā€˜til I was holding your hand.ā€ Ah, teenage nostalgia.Ā  Beyond the reminiscent vibes of yesteryear, ā€œTeenagers in Loveā€exemplifies the consistency of Pop Psychology, the 2014 album by alternative collective, Neon Trees.Ā  The quick-paced gem finds frontman Tyler Glennsounding absolutely marvelous, thanks to his gifted set of pipes and top-notch vocal production.

ā€œHeā€™s a teen, a teenager in love
Heā€™s a teen, a teenager in love
What a tragic attraction
Whatā€™s the point of romance?ā€

10. Lorde, ā€œWhite Teeth Teensā€

Pure HeroineĀ ā€¢ Republic ā€¢Ā 2013

Lorde, Pure Heroine Ā©Ā Republicā€œWe wouldnā€™t be seen dead here in the day / I guess youā€™re lucky that itā€™s dark nowā€¦ take a shot nowā€¦ā€On ā€œWhite Teeth Teens,ā€Grammy-winning musician Lordetranscends the literal, making references to battle, such as the aforementioned excerpt from verse one, as well as ā€œI like your reckoning, but we got our methods / And thereā€™s nothing here to stopā€¦ā€ from verse two.

The bridge confirms that the battle is social:

ā€œIā€™ll let you in on something big
I am not a white teeth teen
I tried to join but never did
The way they are, the way they seem is something else, itā€™s in the blood
Their molars blinking like lights, in the underpass where we all sit
And do nothing and love it.ā€

11. Neon Trees, ā€œTeenage Soundsā€

Picture ShowĀ ā€¢ Mercury ā€¢Ā 2012

Neon Trees, Picture Show Ā© Mercuryā€œToo all the cool kids on my block / Whereā€™s the original thought.ā€ Sigh, before being a ā€œTeenager in Loveā€, Neon Trees, specifically frontman Tyler Glenn, were making ā€œTeenage Sounds.ā€ ā€œTeenage Soundsā€ is the second song on the bandā€™s sophomore album, Picture Show, an LP that features one of their most popular hits, ā€œEverybody Talks.ā€Ā  Donā€™t get it twisted though ā€“ ā€œTeenage Soundsā€ is a bop!Ā  Glenn is fed up, asserting on the second verse, ā€œIā€™m sick of always operating out of fear / Iā€™m sick of being called a fag because Iā€™m queer.ā€ Preach on T.G.!

ā€œOh yeah you never heard us
Donā€™t ever try to turn us down
Weā€™re making all the noise
Weā€™re making teenage sounds
Itā€™s the same old song and dance
Weā€™re sick of everybody trying to be famous.ā€

12. Katy Perry, ā€œTeenage Dreamā€

Teenage DreamĀ ā€¢ Capitol ā€¢Ā 2010

Katy Perry, Teenage Dream Ā© Capitolā€œLetā€™s go all the way tonight / No regrets, just love / We can dance until we die / You and I, weā€™ll be young forever.ā€ Katy Perry opened her third studio album (second pop album), Teenage Dream with a bang.Ā  To describe title track ā€œTeenage Dreamā€ as merely a good opening cut would be an understatement. Dr. Luke delivers strong production, while Perry compels with her breathy vocals on the verses, and assertive, powerful pipes on the catchy chorus. ā€œTeenage Dreamā€ is the exemplification of the type of pop track that suits Perry perfectly.

ā€œYou make me feel like Iā€™m living a teenage dream
The way you turn me on
I canā€™t sleep
Letā€™s run away and donā€™t ever look back
Donā€™t ever look back
My heart stops when you look at me
Just one touch
Now baby, I believe this is real
So take a change and donā€™t ever look back
Donā€™t ever look back.ā€

13. Alicia Keys, ā€œTeenage Love Affairā€

As I Am ā€¢Ā RCA ā€¢Ā 2007

Alicia Keys, As I Am Ā© RCAā€œAnother secret meeting / On the fifth-floor staircase / Iā€™m gonna give you this letter / Of all the things I canā€™t say.ā€ ā€œTeenage Love Affairā€ as among the gems from As I Am, the third studio album (fourth overall) by Grammy-winning R&B singer/songwriter Alicia Keys.Ā  Although among the elites, ā€œTeenage Love Affairā€ didnā€™t quite achieve the same glory as ā€œSuperwomanā€, ā€œNo One,ā€ or ā€œLike Youā€™ll Never See Me Again.ā€ Nonetheless, the ā€˜feelsā€™ ā€“ the nostalgic, soulful vibe ā€“ is irresistible.Ā  Keys is in love, rendezvousing with the man of her dreams.

ā€œNothing really matters
I donā€™t really care
What nobody tell me
Iā€™m gonna be here
Itā€™s a matter of extreme of importance
My first teenage love affair.ā€

14. My Chemical Romance, ā€œTeenagersā€

The Black Parade ā€¢Ā Reprise ā€¢ 2006

My Chemical Romance, The Black Parade / Living with Ghosts (The 10th Anniversary) Ā© Repriseā€œAll teenagers scare the living shit out of me.ā€ Ah, a classic, iconic line from one of the best songs from 00s standouts, My Chemical Romance. After growing exponentially in popularity following ā€œHelenaā€ (Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge), The Black Parade was definitely a big deal.Ā Besides ā€œTeenagers,ā€ The Black Parade features gems such as ā€œWelcome to the Black Paradeā€ and personal favorite, ā€œCancerā€ (not the godawful disease of course).Ā  Essentially, Gerard Way captures the disgruntled teenager to perfection.

ā€œTheyā€™re gonna clean up your looks
With all the lies in the books
To make a citizen out of you
Because they sleep with a gun
And keep an eye on you, son
So they can watch all the things you do.ā€

15. Marilyn Manson, ā€œDisposable Teensā€

Holy WoodĀ ā€¢ Interscope ā€¢ 2000

Marilyn Manson, Holy Wood Ā© Interscopeā€œYou said you wanted evolution / The ape was a great big hit / You say you want a revolution man / And I say that youā€™re full of shit.ā€ Hmmā€¦ For the 15thsong on this playlist, ā€œDisposable Teensā€, two mass murderers, Columbine High School perpetrators Eric Harris andĀ Dylan Klebold serve as the inspiration. Musical influence was questioned in regards to the Columbine massacre with Marilyn Manson being the chief artist blamed. While ultimately it was myth, Manson responded with a song that Loudwire included in its list of Disturbing Songs People Love.Ā  Author Graham Hartmann asserts that Manson was ā€œlikely commenting on the events aftermath, along with referencing George Orwellā€™s ā€˜Nineteen Eighty-Four.ā€™ā€ Thereā€™s nothing ā€˜warm and fuzzyā€™ about ā€œDisposable Teens.ā€

ā€œI want to thank you mom
I want to thank you dad
For bringing this fucking world
To a bitter end
I never really hated the one true God
But the God of the people I hated.ā€

Lyrically, Manson is always captivating.Ā  Here, he seems to be repudiating the actions of Harris and Klebold, whom he was blamed for influencing.

16. Nirvana, ā€œSmells Like Teen Spiritā€

NevermindĀ ā€¢Ā Geffen ā€¢ 1991

Nirvana, Nevermind Ā©Ā Geffenā€œTeenage Dreamā€ by Katy Perry, ā€œTeenagersā€ by My Chemical Romance, and evenĀ  ā€œDisposable Teensā€ by Marilyn Manson are incredibly popular teen songs.Ā  But perhaps the most famous of them all, or at least the most iconic, comes courtesy of Kurt Cobain and Seattle grunge band, Nirvana.Ā  ā€œSmells Like Teen Spiritā€ is undoubtedly the bandā€™s crowning achievement, and still resonates to this day. Itā€™s an example of a transcendent, timeless record ā€“ something thatā€™s often strived for but rarely attained.Ā  Besides the assertive, gritty vocals by Cobain, itā€™s the clever lyrics that take ā€œSmells Like Teen Spiritā€ to the next level.

ā€œWith the lights out, itā€™s less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto, an Albino
A mosquito, my libido, yeah.ā€
