Pop duo Surfaces maintain good vibes with their short but sweet single, “Baby Blue,” sure to keep summer alive and well into winter.
When it comes to Surfaces, the listener is treated to feel-good, innocent, inoffensive pop. Curse words aren’t a requirement to make lit
records, after all, even in 2023. The duo was electric on their hit,
“Sunday Best”, still their biggest claim to fame. On the brief
“Baby Blue”,
Forrest Frank and
Colin Padalecki drop another pleasant, respectable pop song. Here, those baby blue eyes are kind of a big deal. Understandable!
Forrest sings the majority of the song, including the chorus, which appears at the top of the song: “She’s got that baby blue, eyes you can sink into / Heatwaves in Malibu, she’s got that (wait), she’s got that.” In the verses, both he and Colin characterize her specialness. In the first verse, Forrest asserts, “I, I was hoping we’d be more than just friends / Ah, it’s like an ocean and she’s pulling me in.” As for Colin, in the second verse, he sings, “And she’s a vacay for my mind, almost every night, from nine to five / Don’t want this dream to ever end, so she won’t ever leave my head.” Ooh-wee. Backed by exuberant production (Colin, Forrest, and
Simon Oscroft), it’s all good vibes as they desire her company (“Hope we can rendezvous…”). All told,
“Baby Blue” is enjoyable. It won’t change your life, mind you, but should provide your playlist with a summery lift well into fall and the wintertime.
