Sugarland, Bigger © Big MachineFollowing an extended hiatus, Sugarland – Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush – is back.  “Bigger” serves as the title track and promo single for their 2018 comeback album.

Believe it or not, Sugarland has been missing in action since 2010! That’s when the duo’s last album, The Incredible Machine, arrived.  Since then, Jennifer Nettles release three albums, including a Christmas album.  Nettles and Kristian Bush are reunited, and given the quality of promo single “Bigger,”the reunion “feels so good.”

“Bigger” kicks off with a hard-hitting beat.  Folks, the groove is sick from the onset.  There’s no doubt that Nettles and Bush mean business – they’re amped up and ready to go. The production consists of a true ‘rhythmic machine’ that is in full force.  This includes acoustic guitar. Moving on to the vocals, Nettles sounds clear and commanding throughout the course of the record.  Her assertive and exuberant approach is a huge selling point.

Adding to the grandeur of “Bigger” is the songwriting.  First, the pre-chorus is incredibly catchy.

“Gravity can’t hold us down
We’re moving at the speed of sound
Past the point from here on out
There’s no going back.”

Topping the pre-chorus, the chorus shines, in all its powerful, robust glory.

“‘Cause we were born for better days
We’ll find a way yeah
We’re gonna be bigger
Don’t give up you’re more than enough
Believe me love yeah you’re gonna be bigger.”

The bridge fittingly contrasts the verses and the chorus.  Notably, Nettles delivers an incredibly rhythmic melody on the bridge. It’s impressive how agile she is on this particular part of the song.

Final Thoughts

All in all, Sugarland makes a grand comeback with “Bigger.” Indeed, the longtime singer/songwriting duo sounds “bigger and better” than ever.  No, “Bigger” is no “Stay,” but it’s a step in the right direction for these country vets.
