Following an extended hiatus, Sugarland – Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush – is back. “Babe,” featuring Taylor Swift, serves as the second advance single for their 2018 comeback album, ‘Bigger.’
Believe it or not, Sugarland has been missing in action since 2010! That’s when the duo’s last album, The Incredible Machine, arrived. Since then, Jennifer Nettles release three albums, including a Christmas album. Nettles and Kristian Bush are united once again, dropping the highly-anticipated Bigger on June 8, 2018. “Babe,” featuring Taylor Swift, serves as the second advance single following the stellar title track.
First things first. Guess who wrote “Babe?” That would be Pat Monahan of Train and of course, Taylor Swift. Expectedly, “Babe” has a pop-feel, which gives it wider appeal beyond the country fanbase. Jennifer Nettles sounds commanding vocally – who’s shocked? While she handles the verse all alone, she’s assisted by Swift on the catchy chorus.
“You really blew this, babe
We ain’t getting through this one, babe
This is the last time I’ll ever call you, babe
This is the last time, this is the last time
This is the last time, I’ll ever call you babe.”
On the second verse, Bush backs up the riled-up Nettles, while following chorus brings the intensity level to new heights. A successful bridge provides contrast, leading into a busy, energetic outgoing chorus and outro with all parties giving their best.
Final Thoughts
Once more, Sugarland has struck gold on “Babe.” The single isn’t revolutionary, but it’s well-rounded for a variety of reasons. One is the crossover appeal – it’s pop savvy yet doesn’t alienate country music fans. Another reason it’s great is thanks to catchy songwriting, particularly the chorus. And finally, the attitude exhibited by Jennifer Nettles, who is nothing short of a force to be reckoned with.
