Rising pop musician Stephen Puth, the younger brother of Grammy-nominated pop artist Charlie Puth, introduces himself to the world with a “Sexual Vibe.”
The name Charlie Puth should be quite familiar. He’s known for his warm and fuzzy, pitch-perfect pipes (“Attention”), his musicianship and production chops, as well as that one distinct eyebrow. There is another musical member of the Puth family making his official debut, Charlie’s younger brother, Stephen Puth. The 24-year old separates himself for his older brother instantly, unafraid to dive into sexual matters on “Sexual Vibe.”
Proof:
“Your effort so effortless
So, don’t move too fast
Cause I like it when ya
Fuck with me reckless
And I’mma give it right back
Make the tension last like…”
Beyond the sex (and f-bomb), Stephen Puth also separates himself vocally from his older bro in other ways. His vocals are noticeably deeper, characterized by more bass and a more masculine quality (no offense to Charlie, of course). His tone definitely stands out, definitely making “Sexual Vibe” appealing. Furthermore, his approach to the performance is rather chill and effortless, never over-singing or over-indulging. That said, arguably, Stephen comes off a bit too casual after three-and-a-half minutes of song, where he could’ve dug in a bit more and provided more vocal contrast. Also, while “Sexual Vibe” is a vibe, a bit more lyrical contrast – perhaps even providing more of ‘the goods’ on the act – could’ve strengthened this record even more.
Final Thoughts
All in all, Stephen Puth gets off to a good start with “Sexual Vibe.” Anytime a song has the word ‘sex’ in it, it naturally piques interest. Does it live up to the title? It’s sexual, and it’s a vibe, but as aforementioned, Puth has room to grow artistically, and the song could’ve paid even closer attention to the details.
