St. Vincent, Daddy's Home [📷: Loma Vista]Grammy winning alternative singer/songwriter St. Vincent compels on her colorful, intriguing, and quirky single, “Pay Your Way in Pain.”

Annie Clark, better known as 🏆 Grammy winning singer/songwriter 🎙 St. Vincent, is back! It’s been three-and-a-half-years since Clark released 💿 MASSEDUCTION, which arrived in October 2017.  Now, 💿 Daddy’s Home is set for release mid-May 2021.  Leading the charge is promo single and album opener 🎵 “Pay Your Way in Pain.”  As always, Clark never fails to disappoint.

“Pay Your Way in Pain” was written by Clark and the highly demanded 🎼✍ Jack Antonoff.  Furthermore, both musicians produce the unique sounding record.  “Pay Your Way in Pain” commences with sort of this cabaret sound – very throwback in quality. The brief piano introduction certainly leads you to believe that the record is going to go in a certain direction.  Soon enough, it transforms into this adventurous joint with a blend of funk (think Prince) and electronic cues.  This quirky number is definitely alternative through and through, sounding like nothing else that’s currently out.  If nothing else, St. Vincent delivers an ear catching record that doesn’t conform in any way, shape, or fashion.  It definitely sets her apart from the crowd.

Some other notes.  I love the way that Clark uses her voice here.  She’s playful and doesn’t offer a straight-ahead performance.  There are vocal effects, unique nuances, and ample expression.  The songwriting is also intriguing.  It tells a compelling story, which is characteristic of St. Vincent’s music of the past. Specifically, the character in the story seems to be facing plenty of pain as the adversity is through the roof from lack of money, being judged, becoming homeless – it’s a lot!

Final Thoughts 💭

“Pay Your Way in Pain” is quirky as albeit.  We wouldn’t have it any other way from St. Vincent.  Ultimately, the record is incredibly intriguing featuring great production, relatable songwriting, and an otherworldly vocal from Annie Clark.  What more can you ask for?
