Sofi Tukker, “Original Sin” | Track Review 🎵

Sofi Tukker (Sophie Hawley-Weld & Tucker Halpern) drop a truly sinful single, “Original Sin,” in advance of their sophomore album, WET TENNIS.

o I think you’ve got / Something wrong with you / Something’s not right with me to / It’s not right with me.” Umm, okay 🎙 Sofi Tukker.  It’s a bit confusing, but we’ll go with it! “But the state that you’re in as innocent / I just can’t believe in / What the fuck’s an original sin anyway.”  Okay, Sofi, now you’ve gone to dropping bombs – f-bombs! In all seriousness, the 🏆 Grammy-nominated dance duo, comprised of 🎙 Sophie Hawley-Weld and 🎙 Tucker Halpern, return with an intriguing single, 🎵 “Original Sin”. “Original Sin” appears on their sophomore studio album, 💿 WET TENNIS, which follows up their 2018 gem, 💿 Treehouse.

As always, all things work soundly on “Original Sin” – nothing truly sinful about the execution.  Both Sophie and Tucker sing respective parts of the song, which contribute to the overall excellence.  Halpern sounds bassy and more nonchalant on the intro and eventual chorus.  He doesn’t exude ample personality, but his cool, calm, and collected performance is part of the charm.  Sophie is the more expressive singer of the two, providing colorful vocals on the verse and pre-chorus.  Also, she provides a lift when singing with her bandmate.  The music (produced by 🎛 Bynon) is strong as well – groovy and slickly produced.  Regarding the lyrics, well, they’re intriguing. The duo seems to be talking in circles intentionally.  “Original Sin” seems to explore mutual wrongness and universal sinfulness… we think! Among my favorite lyrics:

“A hurting hand is just connected to a hurting soul

It’s not your fault if you’re a hurting heart

Sometimes it happens with the more you know.”

Final Thoughts 💭 

All in all, “Original Sin” proves to be another welcome addition to the Sofi Tukker collection. It’s a fine preview released in advance of WET TENNIS.  Does it eclipse the best songs I’ve heard from the duo? No, but again, it’s totally worthwhile and in my eyes, certainly NOT sinful!
