Snoop Dogg doesn’t serve up anything innovative on “Slid Off,” but he does deliver a fun, minimalist rap banger that enhances the playlist in the dead of winter.
The opening four-count sets the tone on “Slid Off.” The drum programming and percussion are striking, providing a mighty anchor for Snoop Dogg. The production is minimalist – skeletal – which signifies a good, old-fashioned rap banger! With the simple but rhythmic backdrop behind him, Snoop Dogg gets to work. He is confident as fuck, impressing with a compelling but easygoing cadence and flow. Silky smooth with those explicit, hard-nosed bars, the expectation is easily met by the veteran rapper. “Bitch nigga X’d out / Let me show you niggas what the West bout,” he raps in the sole verse, and concludes, “Cooked up this hot beat, now you on the hot seat / Look you in the eyes, you are not me.” Before the verse, he unveils the chorus, where he asserts, “I show you how to get off, baby blew the lid off / Now I’m at the pad, a nigga slid off…” Word. After he finishes talking his shee-it, he lets the playful, minimalist instrumental ride out. “Slid Off” isn’t a life-changing rap record by any means. Snoop Dogg has long proved himself. But this is a fun joint released mid-January that easily adds some oomph to the playlist.
