Smokepurpp continues to be light on substance on his latest single, “Nephew.” Nonetheless, he and featured guest Lil Pump provide some replay value.
Smokepurpp is among the most prolific rappers associated with SoundCloud. The guy definitely puts out a large quantity of music. In the past, I’ve been skeptical about the ‘quality’ of that music. That said, his single “Nephew” is a definite improvement from the young rapper. The substance is still questionable – very questionable – but a definite improvement. A ‘young’ single gets even younger with an appearance by Lil Pump.
“I’ma paint, on her face like I’m DoodleBob / Jump in, that pu**y like I scuba dive.” Yes, Smokepurpp is sexually-charged from the jump. He knows exactly what he wants to ‘do.’ Give him credit for being confident, even if he’s being obnoxious… There’s some unpredictability following the intro that keeps the listener engaged. A sleek beat and minimalist synth anchors “Nephew” following the intro. Throughout, Smokepurpp’s flow stands out. On the verse, he serves up better rhymes than he delivered through most of the questionable Bless Yo Trap, but still, he’s not a prolific lyricist by any means. He continues to thrive off of shallow things, but, on this cut, it works out. The contrast from Lil Pump is a selling point. Like Purpp, the substance is lacking (“Before you suck my dick you better sign a non-disclosure”), but the flow is worthwhile.
Final Thoughts
Finally, a Smokepurpp joint I actually like… at least to an extent. I’m irked by the oversexualized, druggy rhymes, but, I think both artists actually have potential, evidenced by their flow. This isn’t game changing, but I’d spin it again, and that’s saying something.
