Smokepurpp, Geek a Lot © Alamo / InterscopeBurgeoning SoundCloud rap sensation Smokepurpp doesn’t tweak ‘the formula’ in the least on single, “Geek A Lot.” At some point, he could stand to ‘shake things up.’

Smokepurpp is among a somewhat polarizing group of newbies in the rap game known as SoundCloud rappers.  Why? Like many of his colleagues, he ascended to fame on ‘the Cloud.’ There’s no shame in the hustle, but, often, many of these SoundCloud rappers have proven to be predictable and devoid of substance.  Such is the case on the latest single by Smokepurpp, “Geek a Lot.”

Smokepurpp keeps things short on “Geek a Lot.” The single clocks in at just 1:48! Boding well in the rapper’s favor is the chorus.

“Damn, I geek a lot, I geek a lot and a lot / I’m off the Xan, pour the Wok / And I got VVS diamonds on my watch / Stop tryin’ come in my spot / I want the brain, want the top / Tell one to come in my spot / I’m off the bean, not the Wok.”

In reiteration, the chorus is a selling point – at least in regards to flow and the overall vibe.  Lyrically, Smokepurpp is incredibly irresponsible, focusing on excess rather than depth.  This just highlights some of the polarizing aspects of Cloud rappers.  The production work is wild, malicious, and dark – another defining characteristic.  The rhymes, themes, and concepts continue to be cliché.

“Wait, yeah I got rich / I could just fuck any bitch… /She see the racks on the floor and she hop on my dick like she was a grasshopper.”

It’s really disgusting.  Smokepurpp goes on to reference Gucci shoes specifically, designer clothes, Xanax, and alcohol.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, Smokepurpp continues to ride the high of the SoundCloud movement at the expense of making a truly artistic statement.  “Geek a Lot” provides temporary enjoyable, but not long-lasting goodness.  It’s sweet, but once the taste is gone, you won’t remember it.
