It only takes ONE hit to solidify a musical legacy 💯! On 1 Hit WONDERful, we highlight songs that were the SOLE hit by a given musician.  It is possible that the artists appearing on this list earned a minor hit or two, BUT for the most part, that ONE hit earned them recognition. So, in the third edition of 1 Hit WONDERful (2026), we dive into “Baby Got Back”, the one-hit wonder by Sir Mix-A-Lot.

“Oh my God, Becky, look at her butt, it is so big, ugh!”
Whoa! Can you say, ASSets 🍑 🤭! Those lyrics hail from the intro of the beloved, peachy Sir Mix-A-Lot (Anthony L. Ray, b. 1963) classic, “Baby Got Back”. “Baby Got Back” is the third track from his 1992 platinum-certified album, Mack Daddy.  This marked the only hit by the rapper on the pop charts.  “Baby Got Back” spent five weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.  The single was certified multiplatinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. Sir-Mix-A-Lot went on to win a Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance.  That’s a very bootylicious and well-deserved W!

Sir Mix-a-Lot produced “Baby Got Back.” He gets an assist, thanks to four samples: “Color Dubbing” by Channel One, the Me So Horny dialogue from the movie Full Metal Jacket, and “I Got Game” and “Seminar” from Sir Mix-a-Lot himself.  While the backdrop is colorful that accompanies the Pacific Northwest rapper, it is his personality-laden lyics that make “Baby Got Back” the sugar, honey, iced tea. “I like big butts, and I cannot lie / You other brothers can’t deny,” he raps memorably in the first verse. Woo, he’s an ass man, which he confirms as he continues, “That when a girl walks in with an itty bitty waist / And a round thing in your face you get sprung.” Within the colorful, honest, and naughty verse, he cries foul regarding flat butts, states her but makes him horny (via Full Metal Jacket dialogue that is sampled), and tells these girls with the butt to “Shake that healthy butt, baby got back.” Gah-day-um! The second verse offers more of the same with Sir Mix-a-Lot complimenting the rump of Florence Griffith Joyner (1959 – 1998), and concluding the verse, memorably: “Even white boys got to shout.”  The third and final verse continues touting the butt, dropping one of the most memorable lines of the song, eventually sampled by Nicki Minaj on her own ass anthem, “Anaconda”: “My anaconda don’t want none / Unless you got buns, hun.”  Confirming his ideal body type in the outro, Sir Mix-a-Lot repeats four times, “Little in the middle but she got much back.” All told, “Baby Got Back” is one of the most unforgettable rap records of all time.  Yes, it was Sir Mix-a-Lot’s only hit, but so many artists have never had even one hit, and if they have, it wasn’t the caliber of this peach-loving fest!
