Silk Sonic – Grammy winners Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak – knock it out of the park once more with “Smokin Out the Window.”
A
t one point,At just over three-and-a-quarter-minutes long, “Smokin Out the Window” runs a respectable length. The record commences with tension via strings and spoken word intro. Soon enough, “Smokin Out the Window” settles into a neo-soul/retro-soul joint, a sweet spot for both Mars and Paak. Even though the style is old-school, select salty language (aka profanity) makes it very 2021, while also showcasing the personalities of both musicians. Musically, I heart the harmonic progression, fat bass line, and of course, the throwback production (Mars and D’Mile). Like the previous singles from An Evening with Silk Sonic, “Smokin Out the Window” features a catchy, memorable chorus, which serves as the centerpiece.
“Smokin’ out the window Singin’ ‘How could she do this to me?’ Oh, I thought that girl belonged to only me But I was wrong ‘Cause she belong to everybody, everybody.’”
Woo! Mars and Paak infuse ample personality, selling “Smokin Out the Window” remarkably well with no dispute of authenticity.
Final Thoughts
All in all, Silk Sonic get it done once more on “Smokin Out the Window.” I love the soulfulness of the ad-libs, the ripeness of the falsetto, and the overall aesthetic created by this duo. The production is fabulous, reminding of the glory days of soul yet sounding refreshing in the 2020s. An Evening with Silk Sonic is set up for success.
