Norwegian pop up-and-comer Sigrid compels on her new single, “I Don’t Want to Know,” continuing to build upon the success of “Don’t Kill My Vibe” and “Raw.”
ICYMI, WHO is Sigrid? She’s the up-and-coming, 21-year-old Norwegian pop star who wowed us with “Don’t Kill My Vibe.” “Don’t Kill My Vibe” was so good that it appeared on our final 100 Best Songs of 2017, following previous appearances on our Best Songs of 2017 (So Far): Edition 2.0and Infographic | 80 Best Songs of 2017 (So Far), Edition 3.0. Impressive. After shining once more on singles “Strangers” and flaunting her distinct vocal tone on “Raw”, the shine continues on “I Don’t Want to Know.”
“I Don’t Want to Know” commences with piano accompaniment, instantly separating it from many of her previous singles. Given the backdrop, it’s unsurprising that Sigrid delivers truly beautiful, expressive vocals. The record becomes more rhythmic on the chorus, adding guitar, subtle thudding kick. This is signified by her cooing falsetto. Also, the piano becomes more rhythmic as well, embracing melodic lines as opposed to block chords.
Some other notes regarding “I Don’t Want to Know.” The lyrics of the chorus shine, in all their simplicity.
“I don’t wanna meet ya, I don’t wanna talk
‘Cause I don’t wanna know that nothing’s changed at all
You don’t need a reason, this is not your fault
I don’t wanna know, I don’t wanna know…”
The second verse, naturally, is more developed than the first – a testament to excellent pacing. The second chorus continues the development of the record, adding more instrumentation, namely strings. The bridge adds contrasts with a slightly different harmonic progression.
Final Thoughts
Once again, Sigrid makes her case as the next big thing in pop. Whether it happens or not is one thing, but this youngster definitely has the ability. Well-performed and well-produced by all means.
