Sia delivers an empowering, inspirational, and uplifting record with “Original,” the promo single from the soundtrack for the film, Dolittle.
Sia is pretty sound when it comes to songwriting – understatement. Furler has penned some truly elite records, including Grammy-nominated gems like “Chandelier” and “Cheap Thrills”, as well as less heralded winners such as the liberating “Bird Set Free” and “Alive”. Maybe lost in the songwriting prowess is how awesome she can sing – she’s definitely an awesome artist/musician. Once more, Furler’s gifts are utilized harmoniously on “Original,” a song from the original motion picture soundtrack for Dolittle.
“Original” is another well-rounded, enjoyable number from Sia. Vocally, she continues to impress, delivering a high-flying performance. Her vocals convey the uplifting, inspirational, and empowering nature of the lyrics. Furler is a master when it comes to big, positive records that make you feel absolutely awesome, so, it’s no surprising that “Original” possesses such virtues. On the pre-chorus, she asserts, “I’m here now to try it all / I’m ready to take a fall / ‘Cause I’m an original / Why deny it?” I agree. Of course, the centerpiece is the chorus that follows in all its glory:
“And I won't waste my life being typical I’ma be original, even when it’s difficult And I won't change myself when they tell me, ‘No’ I’ma be original, I’ma be original.”
Final Thoughts
No reason to knock Sia for being true to herself on “Original.” Not only is ‘being true to self’ the thoughtful premise and theme of the record, it’s also what she does as far as the conception and formula on this soundtrack single. “Original” may not bring a brand-new ‘original’ sound, mindset, or main idea, but it is does serve up respectable songwriting, an excellent vocal performance, and ultimately, a nice addition to any playlist, particularly one comprised of ‘good vibes.’
