Even though DRAMās debut album Big Baby D.R.A.M. is āall over the place,ā itās intriguing and enjoyable through and through.
Rap newcomer DRAMĀ drops his debut album Big Baby D.R.A.M after earning a top 10 hit with āBroccoliā. The weed anthem was just too catchy for radio to ignore, elevating his profile.Ā Infectious describes his debut album.Ā So does the word bizarre.Ā Even though Big Baby D.R.A.M. is āall over the place,ā itās intriguing and enjoyable through and through.
From the jump itās clear that Big Baby D.R.A.M. is going to be a trip.Ā Lush, synth-heavy intro āGet It Myselfā finds DRAM singing, embracing his R&B persona.Ā This persona continues throughout the course of the album, something of a bonus for those merely expecting rhymes.
āMisunderstoodā
First full-length joint āMisunderstoodā goes hard… in an R&B sort of way.Ā The production work is epic, while DRAM passionately pop raps the first verse.Ā Similarly, guest MC Young Thug is drenched in auto tune, singing.Ā Some of his rhymes are indecipherable.Ā The final verse, rapped by DRAM remains in the pop-rap idiom, but is slightly clearer and more pointed.
Two-part juggernaut āIn A Minute / In Houseā is drenched in sex.Ā On āIn A Minute,ā the MC expresses his urges. He asserts:
āIn a minute, Iāll give your ass a little slaP
In a minute, cause I know you like it like that.ā
āIn Houseā is slower, more enigmatic in quality. The vibe remains sexually driven, but adds drugs to the mix:
āWeed, got that in the house
Lean, got that in the house.ā
āMonticello Aveā
āMonticello Aveā strips vocal effects and pitch in favor of straight rhymes⦠during the first verse.Ā The results are equally compelling āa sound change of pace.Ā Afterward, he canāt resist, once more singing the hook and the remainder of the song.Ā All in all, a strong performance and selection.
Erykah Badu joins in on āWiFi.ā While Wi-Fi is referenced, the key lyric clarifies where D.R.A.M.ās mind is at:
āDo your boyfriend pay your bill for you
To do this Netflix and chill with me?ā
āWiFiā is odd like much of the album, but it works.Ā Two idiosyncratic personalities make for a thrilling duet.
āCash Machineā and āBroccoliā
Flex track āCash Machineā has the same infectious vibe that made āBroccoliā successful. Sometimes a similar blueprint yields disappointment. In this case, he has another banger on his hands.Ā The production work is exceptional and the rhymes potent.Ā āBroccoliā is the better track, but āCash Machineā isnāt far behind.
Speaking of āBroccoli,ā it follows in all its glory and good vibes. Itās exceptionally well produced, superbly performed by both D.R.A.M. and Lil Yachty, and simply catchy AF. The weed anthem gets stuck in the head from the first listen.
āAināt no tellin what Iām finna be on Iām beyond all that fuck shit...ā
Continuing to pack punches, āCuteā keeps the momentum going. Itās corny, but irresistible.Ā The hook keeps it simple, backed by a hard beat:
āI think youāre cute, I think youāre cute
Oh yes I do, I think youāre cute.ā
Beyond the hook and overall sound, the best moment of āCuteā comes during the bridge:
āGirl we need to go out on a date
We really do a little something
If itās cool Iāll pick you up at 8
We can really do a little something
We can really do a little something baby
Looking at this pretty face, it drives me crazy.ā
āOutta Sight / Dark Lavender Interludeā
Big Baby D.R.A.M. continues to roll on with solid moments.Ā āOutta Sight / Dark Lavender Interludeā give the MC another two-part track, common in todayās music.Ā The synth-driven āOutta Sightā is danceable ā firmly planted in the urban contemporary vein.Ā āDark Lavender Interludeā contrasts, slackening the pace, sounding a bit buzzed.
āChange My #ā is lush, continuing to find D.R.A.M. embracing R&B.Ā After spending the majority of the song singing, he hits hard with rhymes.Ā It doesnāt resonate as much as the crĆØme de crĆØme (led by āBroccoliā), but remains potent enough.
The same can be said of āPassword,ā which is brief, but essentially as entertaining as everything else. ā100%ā and āSweet Va Breezeā are both sound without propelling the effort to soaring new heights. The brief āWorkaholicā gives the effort more oomph, something lacking towards the end of the LP.
Final ThoughtsĀ
Overall, Big Baby D.R.A.M. is an entertaining, well-rounded album.Ā Depth is by no means the M.O., but it doesnāt need to be.Ā The MC has a terrific personality and is equally talented as a rapper and vocalist.Ā While the 52-minute duration is respectable, this album couldāve been trimmed and been even more effective.Ā All in all, this is a great debut. Rap fans may be somewhat disappointed that it is dominated by singing.
