DJ/producer Zedd amplifies the greatness of an already terrific song, Shawn Mendes’ soulful-pop joint, “Lost in Japan,” with a tasteful remix.
Rarely does a remix get a track review, but we’ll make an exception when it involves Canadian heartthrob Shawn Mendes and Russian-German DJ/producer Zedd. In this case, the original song, “Lost in Japan”, ranked among the best songs from Mendes’ self-tiled third studio album.
The following was written about the gem:
Mendes continues to flaunt his prodigious pipes on “Lost in Japan.” Released shortly after “In My Blood,” “Japan” served as a stark contrast. Contextually, it connects to “Nervous” regarding the more pronounced pop-soul sound than we’ve been accustomed to from Shawn. This is a groovy, danceable joint, characterized by superb production comprised of cool synths, a robust bass line, and tasteful piano. The chorus is best part of the record – the celebrated centerpiece.
A four-star joint before being remixed, Zedd puts his stamp on this remix early on, yet doesn’t fundamentally change “Lost in Japan.” Given the awesomeness of the original, this is smart move on the producer’s part. Mendes’ vocals become more ‘electrified’ – chocked-full of vocal effects. Nice vocal harmonies are also added that don’t grace the original. Even so, it still retains the soulful vibes of the superb original. What Zedd does add is brightness, thanks to some excellently chosen synths. Maintaining a relatively conservative remixing approach, the second verse features clear, untouched vocals by Mendes, while the colorful harmonies return on the pre-chorus.
Final Thoughts
All in all, “Lost in Japan (Remix)” in the hands of Zedd is a successful, well-executed remix of an already fantastic song. There’s really nothing more to add.
